![]() Princeton's largest lead was 17 Friday night against Columbia in Jadwin Gym, but getting a win required the Tigers to hold off a late run from the Lions that trimmed the lead to four at 75-71 with 2:40 to go. The Tigers did just that, getting a Steven Cook 3 on their next trip down to push the lead back to 7 and hold on from there. |

• Princeton's win over Columbia Friday night kept Princeton in strong position to contend for the Ivy title while putting Columbia in a tough spot with three league losses. The Tigers (9-1 Ivy) remained tied with Yale (10-1) in the loss column after the Bulldogs beat Harvard in New Haven Friday night.
• Princeton's schedule the rest of the way includes hosting Cornell (2-9 Ivy) Saturday, traveling to Harvard (3-8) and Dartmouth (3-8) next weekend, and hosting Penn (5-5) a week from Tuesday. Yale's remaining schedule includes hosting Dartmouth (3-8) Saturday and traveling to Cornell (2-9) and Columbia (8-3) next weekend.
• A 9-1 Ivy start has historically proven a good sign for Princeton's Ivy title hopes, but no guarantee. This is the 19th time Princeton has started 9-1 in the league, and of the previous 18 times, Princeton went on to win at least a title share 16 times. Five of those 16 titles were shared, and Princeton went 3-2 in the subsequent playoff game to determine the NCAA berth. The last time Princeton started 9-1 in the league was in 2011, when Princeton finished 12-2 and beat Harvard in the Ivy playoff.
• Princeton has already won more games this year than it did all of last season, now with 19 after 16 wins a year ago. Friday's win pulled Mitch Henderson past Bill Carmody at 93 wins for solo possession of sixth place all-time at Princeton. Henderson is within another good season of climbing all the way to third place, with Frederick Leuhring (1912-20) at 100 wins, Butch van Breda Kolff (1962-67) at 103 and Albert Wittmer (1923-32) at 115. The top two, of course, will require a lot of seasons and a lot of wins, with Franklin "Cappy" Cappon (1938-43, 1946-61) second at 250 wins and Pete Carril (1967-96) first at 514.
• Princeton has had an equal or better record from the first half to the second half of the Ivy season in all four years under Mitch Henderson. In 2012, The Tigers were 4-3 in the first go-round and 6-1 in the second. In 2013, the team was 5-2 in each half. In 2014, the team struggled to a 2-5 start before going 6-1 in the back half. Last season, the team was 4-3 over the first seven and 5-2 over the last seven. So far in 2016, Princeton was 6-1 over the first half and is 3-0 so far over the second half.
• Princeton's Ivy League win streak of seven games is the program's longest single-season league win streak under Mitch Henderson and longest since the 2011 Ivy title team won eight in a row. Princeton won nine straight Ivy games in 2004, another title year, and last won 10+ consecutive Ivy games in 1998, Henderson's senior year and Princeton's last 14-0 Ivy campaign.
• For those looking far ahead, only twice in Ivy history, even with all the years that Penn and Princeton dominated the league, have two teams finished at 13-1 with those two teams splitting the series. The first time was in 1959, when Dartmouth beat Princeton in Hanover and six days later, Princeton beat Dartmouth in Dillon Gym. The other time was in 1981, when Princeton beat Penn in Jadwin early in the league season and Penn beat Princeton less than a month later at The Palestra.
• Princeton's 85-56 win at Cornell two weeks ago saw Princeton just about do all it seeks to do in order to get a win. The Tigers hit 11 3-pointers, got balanced scoring from Henry Caruso (13), Amir Bell (13), Devin Cannady (11) and Myles Stephens (10), outrebounded the Big Red 38-26, had fewer turnovers by a 13-11 count, held Cornell to 36.2 percent shooting while shooting 50 percent itself, and held Cornell's big two scorers on the season, Matt Morgan (19.1 ppg) and Robert Hatter (17.3), to 22 points combined.
• Entering Friday's games, Princeton's RPI was 41st, 12 spots ahead of Yale's at 53rd. The Tigers were 88 spots in front of Columbia as the third-overall Ivy team at 129th. All five of Princeton's defeats were to teams in the top 53, including Miami (8), Maryland (9), Saint Joseph's (26), Stony Brook (51) and Yale (53).
• With the win over Columbia, Princeton's RPI jumped six spots from the day before to 33rd. That's the highest RPI in the Ivy League by 21 spots over Yale and the highest RPI among New Jersey's eight Division I teams by five spots over Seton Hall. Princeton's five losses are all to teams in the top 54 of the RPI and all away from Jadwin Gym, including Miami (7), Maryland (10), Saint Joseph's (25), Stony Brook (49) and Yale (54).
• Devin Cannady's 279 points this season already make him the sixth-highest scoring Princeton freshman in the era of freshman eligibility (since 1978-79). Given his average of 11.6 points per game, he is on pace to finish fourth on that list with 326 points, with any postseason on top of that. That'd be just short of second and third place, held by Spencer Gloger (336 in 1999-2000) and Douglas Davis (333 in 2008-09). Chris Young holds the freshman scoring record with 387 points in 1998-99. Between Cannady and Davis are Sydney Johnson (273 in 1993-94), Rick Hielscher (288 in 1991-92) and John Smyth (319 in 1982-83).
• Princeton was down by at least eight points with less than five minutes to go in three of its first eight Ivy League games and came back to win two of those, at Penn and Columbia. In looking at the last five minutes of those three games, including the Yale contest in which Princeton had the chance to tie in the final minute, the Tigers outshot their foes .459 (17-37) to .378 (14-37) from the field, .357 (5-14) to .250 (3-12) from 3, took 10 more free throws than the trio of foes and made them at a .737 clip (28-38). Devin Cannady, who scored the team's final eight points in regulation and five of the 12 in the OT at Columbia, scored 24 of the team's 67 points in the last five minutes of those games. Steven Cook and Amir Bell had the next-most points in that span, with 12 apiece.
• Since the calendar flipped from 2015 to 2016, rookie Myles Stephens has seen a jump in his numbers. He shot .379 (11-29) from the field in the 2015 portion of the schedule and .557 (34-61) since and averaged 1.7 boards and 3.4 points before the new year and 2.7 boards and 7.2 points since.
• Under Mitch Henderson, the Tigers now have a 34-29 (.540) record in the pre-New Year portion of the schedule and a 59-22 (.728) record from Jan. 1 forward.
• Princeton has made at least half its field goal tries 12 times this season and has shot .400 or better from the field 20 times in the season's 24 games. The Tigers are 18-2 in those games (loss vs. Maryland, at Yale). The Penn game was the first and only time this season Princeton won without shooting at least .400 from the field.
• Princeton has made 10 3-pointers in a game 14 times this season, including pouring in 13 last time out against Columbia.
• Junior Henry Caruso, who is shooting .546 from the field on the season, has made at least half his field goal tries in 18 of the 24 games this season. Princeton is 15-3 when Caruso makes at least half his tries and 4-2 when he doesn't.
• Princeton enters the weekend as the top team in the Ivy in scoring offense (79.7 ppg), assist-to-turnover ratio (1.3), defensive rebounds (27.7 drpg) and 3s made pe rgame (9.7). Individually, Princeton has the Ivy's top free throw shooter in Devin Cannady (.882), the league's leader in 3FG percentage in Henry Caruso (.478, 33-69), and the league's top player in assist-to-turnover ratio, with Spencer Weisz at 2.7.
• Entering Saturday's games, Princeton was in the top 10 percent nationally (top 34) in seven statistical categories, including fourth in fewest fouls (415), ninth in fewest turnovers (270), 16th in 3s per game (9.7), 23rd in winning percentage (.792), 24th in scoring margin (+11.6 ppg), 30th in 3FG percentage (.384) and 34th in scoring offense (79.7 ppg). Individually, Devin Cannady, Henry Caruso, Pete Miller and Spencer Weisz combined for seven top-250 national statistical rankings, led by Cannady's 15th-ranked .882 free throw percentage.
• Under Mitch Henderson, Princeton has scored 90 points in a game six times. That's more than all other post-Pete Carril coaches combined and the fourth-most under a coach in program history. Princeton scored 90+ 21 times under Pete Carril, 18 times under Butch van Breda Kolff and 11 times under Cappy Cappon.
• Princeton's juniors (Caruso, Cook, Miller, Rayner, Weisz) have scored 1,083 of the team's 1,912 points, or 56.6 percent. Players who are able to return next year have scored 99.2 percent of the team's points (1,897 of 1,912).
• Princeton has had eight double-doubles this season, including three in one game at Lipscomb, the first time that has happened in program history. Princeton's eight double-doubles this season, by four players (Caruso 3, Cook, Miller 2, Weisz 2) have already surpassed last year's five, which were all by Hans Brase, and are the most since the 2010-11 team had 10 double-doubles by three players. Twenty-six double-doubles, by the 1964-65 and 1966-67 teams, is the program record.

• Entering Saturday's games, Cornell ranked in the top 10 percent nationally in turnovers forced (30th, 15.12/game) and steals per game (34th, 7.8 spg). Robert Hatter, Matt Morgan and David Onuorah combined for 16 top-250 individual statistical rankings, led by Morgan's 52nd-best 18.9 points per game.
• Cornell led the Ivy entering Saturday's games in steals per game at 7.8 and had the league's top two scorers in Matt Morgan (18.9 ppg) and Robert Hatter (17.9 ppg). Darryl Smith led the league with a .637 field goal percentage (86-135), and Morgan led the league in 3s made per game at 2.7.

Mitch Henderson '98 is in his fifth season as Princeton's head coach. His overall record at Princeton is 93-51. Under Henderson, Princeton is 52-11 at home, 46-20 in the Ivy League, and 28-5 in the Ivy League at home. Princeton is 76-17 when leading at the half under Henderson. Henderson is the first Princeton coach since John Thompson III '88 (2000-04) to have winning seasons in each of his first four campaigns. He is the sixth Princeton coach to accomplish that, following Frederick Leuhring (1912-20), Butch van Breda Kolff '44 (1962-67), Pete Carril (1967-96), Bill Carmody (1996-2000) and Thompson III '88 (2000-04). Henderson is in fifth place on the Princeton all-time wins list at 93 wins after having passed Bill Carmody (92), who was a Princeton assistant for Henderson's first two seasons as a player and head coach for Henderson's last two, with the Feb. 26 win over Columbia. Carmody hired Henderson as an assistant coach at Northwestern in 2000, where Henderson remained for 11 seasons until coming to Princeton. Leuhring, with 100 wins, is in fifth place. Henderson was a second-team All-Ivy Leaguer in 1998, an honorable mention All-Ivy Leaguer in 1997, and was a two-time Ivy Rookie of the Week in 1994-95. Henderson graduated as the fourth-leading assist man in program history (kept since 1974-75) and is now sixth, having been surpassed by two of his players, Ian Hummer '13 and T.J. Bray '14. Henderson graduated fifth in career steals (kept since 1974-75) and is now ninth, having been passed by former teammate Gabe Lewullis '99, Will Venable '05, Marcus Schroeder '10 and his former player T.J. Bray '14. Henderson is one of six Princeton alumni who are current Division I head coaches, including John Thompson III '88 (Georgetown), Joe Scott '87 (Denver), Mike Brennan '94 (American), Chris Mooney '94 (Richmond) and Sydney Johnson '97 (Fairfield). |
