Volleyball Picks Up First Win, Sweeps Charleston To Open Weekend Pair
February 06, 2016 | Men's Volleyball
The Princeton men's volleyball team picked a nice time to grab its first win of the season. The Tigers rallied past a feisty Charleston team in the second set and controlled the third for a 3-0 win and a perfect start to its 2016 EIVA season.
Princeton moved to 1-0 in league play with a 25-19, 27-25, 25-15 victory Friday night in the first of two straight in Charleston.
Senior Devin Stearns, who ranks eighth in the NCAA in kills, recorded 12 kills and hit .320 in the victory, while sophomore middle Billy Andrew added five kills, three digs and two blocks. Freshman Corry Short came off the bench with five kills and six digs, and he hit over .300 in his EIVA debut.
Junior setter Chris Kennedy recorded 24 assists, eight digs and three aces in the win, while senior libero Michael Bagnell had 12 digs.
The critical point of the match came late in the second set, when Charleston appeared poised to even the match. Trailing 24-20, Princeton got a service error, and then four straight points off the Kennedy serve. Charleston fought off one set ball, but Stearns killed another and Princeton took advantage on its second opportunity.
A 6-0 run midway through the third put the Tigers well on their way to victory in their EIVA opener. They will look to become the lone 2-0 team in the EIVA Saturday night at 7 pm in the second match at Charleston.
