PRINCETON, N.J. (3/14/16) - No. 7 Princeton faces its third top-10 team of the season as it travels to face No. 8 Penn State in a mid-week game. Game time is at 3 p.m., on Wednesday, March 16, at Penn State Lacrosse Field.
Eye on the TigersPrinceton is coming off of its first loss of the season, a 16-11 game at Notre Dame from Sunday. The Tigers are 4-1 overall and remain No. 7 in the IWLCA poll for the second straight week. Princeton averages 12.40 goals per game, while limited teams to 9.20 gpg. The offense is sparked by junior Olivia Hompe, who averages 5.2 points per game on 21 goals and five assists. Senior Stephanie Paloscio has 10 points on five goals and five assists. Senior Anya Gersoff contributes nine points on eight goals and one helper, while sophomore Colby Chanenchuk has nine points as well on three goals and a team-high six assists. Sophomore Ellie McNulty has a team-best 10 draw controls with Gersoff following with nine. Junior Amanda Leavell is the leader in caused turnoers with seven, while senior Liz Bannantine has six. Junior Ellie DeGarmo owns every decision and has a 9.18 goals against average and a .543 save percentage. She also has the most groun dballs on the team with 15.
The Series
Princeton holds a 23-13 edge in the all-time series with Penn State and has won the last two meetings. The Tigers took a 12-11 game on March 18 last season and won 16-13 in the NCAA quarterfinals at Virginia in 2014, after a 13-12 loss during the regular-season, which snapped a five-game win streak in the series for Princeton.
Scouting the Nittany Lions
Penn State is 6-1 on the season and is ranked No. 8 in the national poll with a four-game unbeaten streak. The team's lone loss was to Virginia, 16-13 on Feb. 27 - one week after Princeton topped the Cavaliers. The Nittany Lions average 14.29 goals per game and 34.1 shots per game, while holding opponents to 10 gpg and 21.7 spg. Madison Cyr leads the offense with 28 points on a team-high 22 goals and six assists. Madison Carter has 20 goals and one assist, while Katie O'Donnell has 16 goals and two helpers. Steph Lazo chips in 10 goals and seven assists, while Jenna Mosketti has 11 points on seven goals and four helpers. Cyr and Abby Smucker lead the team in ground balls with 12 apiece. The pair also leads in caused turnovers with 21 combined. Mosketta has 35 draw control wins while Carter has 11. Emi Smith is 5-1 in goal and has a 10.29 GAA and a .411 save percentage. Cat Rainone has the other decision, playing in just over 45 minutes of action.
