Winter 2016 - A Wonderland Of Princeton Postseason Stories
March 16, 2016 | General
March Madness at Princeton has meant more than just basketball in 2016. Actually,it's meant more than just March, for that matter.
An incredible winter postseason actually began in late February, when the women's squash team finished fourth in the Howe Cup national championships. It has swung into high gear as March has rolled along, with no fewer than nine Princeton teams having qualified for postseason competition.
Chronologically, they are:
Women's Squash - Princeton reached the Howe Cup semifinals before losing to Penn 6-3. The Tigers then lost a 5-4 decision to Trinity to finish in fourth place. The Trinity recap can be found HERE.
Women's Indoor Track and Field - Cecelia Barowski ran the 800 meters at the NCAA championships last weekend in Birmingham. Her weekend began with a first-place finish in her heat last Friday night, and she then finished sixth in the final, earning All-America honors. The recap is HERE.
Women's hockey - Princeton was rewarded for an outstanding regular season, which included an Ivy League title, with the program's second trip to the eight-team NCAA tournament. Princeton got an at-large bid to the tournament despite falling in the ECAC quarterfinals, which is further evidence of how much the committee valued how well the team had done all year. Princeton traveled to Minnesota to take on the defending NCAA champ last Saturday, and the Gophers defeated Princeton 6-2. To read about the game, click HERE.
Men's Basketball - The Tigers fell 86-81 in overtime at Virginia Tech in a great opening round game in the NIT. The loss ended Princeton's season at 22-7. Princeton vs. Virginia Tech recap can be found HERE.
Women's Basketball - Princeton's women's basketball team did something never done before, and that was to give the Ivy League a second bid to the NCAA tournament. The Tigers earned an at-large bid and played as a No. 11 seed against West Virginia, falling 74-65. It was the sixth NCAA appearance in seven years for the Tigers. Princeton vs. West Virginia review is HERE.
Wrestling - Princeton qualified four wrestlers for the NCAA championships in Madison Square Garden, running its two year total to nine wrestlers after last year's program-record five. For a closer look at Princeton's run at the Garden, click HERE.
Men's Swimming and Diving - Princeton, the 2016 Ivy League champ, will have seven swimmers competing at the NCAA championships next weekend in Atlanta. Of that group, three have qualified for individual events, and the remaining will compete along with the others in three different relays. For complete information, click HERE.
Men's and Women's Fencing - Step 1 in the NCAA fencing championships (a co-ed event) is to qualify the maximum 12 fencers. Princeton, who won a share of both the men's and women's Ivy League titles, is one of four schools to have done so in advance of next weekend's event at Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass. The complete rundown is HERE.
