![]() Princeton had an 18-point second-half lead last Tuesday against Penn in the regular-season finale, but the Quakers made the Tigers hold off a last possession that could have won the game for Penn. The Tigers were 9 of 18 from 3-point range and outrebounded Penn 39-32, but Penn outshot Princeton from the field 50 percent (28-56) to 40 percent (26-64) to make it tough for Princeton. |

• Princeton will play its first game in the NIT since 2002 Wednesday night at Virginia Tech. The Tigers were last in the postseason in 2014, when they advanced to the quarterfinals of the CBI with a win over Tulane before falling to Fresno State.
• Princeton leads the Ivy League in both NIT and NCAA appearances with, now, six and 24. Princeton has claimed six of the Ivy's 10 all-time NIT berths, with Brown (2003) and Harvard (2011) the only Ivy teams to play in the NIT since Princeton's last appearance in 2002. Yale has the Ivy's last NIT win, winning at Rutgers before losing to Tennessee Tech.
• Princeton is one of three Ivies in the postseason and one of two Ivies playing Virginia teams. Yale won the Ivy's automatic NCAA berth and will face 5-seed Baylor Thursday afternoon in Providence, R.I. Columbia has a berth in the CIT and will host Norfolk State Wednesday.
• Princeton had three All-Ivy League honorees when the team was announced Wednesday, with Henry Caruso on the first team (first All-Ivy honor), Spencer Weisz on the second team (second team 2015, ROY 2014) and Steven Cook as an honorable mention (second team 2015). Caruso is Princeton's fifth first-teamer in six seasons, along with Kareem Maddox '11 in 2011, Ian Hummer '13 in 2012 and 2013 (also POY) and T.J. Bray '14 in 2014. Prior to Maddox, Princeton hadn't had a first-teamer since 2006.
• Wednesday's game is a matchup of past NIT champions. Princeton won in 1975 and Virginia Tech won in 1973 and 1995. While Virginia Tech has won at least one game in 11 straight NIT appearances after its first appearance in 1966, Princeton won at least a game in each of its first three appearances (1972, 1975, 1999) before losing its first-round game its last two times, in 2000 at Penn State and in 2002 at Louisville.
• Here are Princeton's results from its five previous NIT appearances:
- 1972: Round of 16 at MSG: Princeton 68, Indiana 60; Quarterfinal at MSG: Niagara 65, Princeton 60.
- 1975: Round of 16 at MSG: Princeton 84, Holy Cross 63; Quarterfinal at MSG: Princeton 86, South Carolina 67; Semifinal at MSG: Princeton 58, Oregon 57; Final at MSG: Princeton 80, Providence 69.
- 1999: Round of 32 in Princeton: Princeton 54, Georgetown 47; Round of 16 in Raleigh: Princeton 61, N.C. Sate 58; Quarterfinal in Cincinnati: Xavier 65, Princeton 58.
- 2000: Round of 32 in State College: Penn State 55, Princeton 41.
- 2002: Round of 32 in Louisville: Louisville 66, Princeton 65.
• Virginia Tech was 3-11 against this year's NCAA Tournament field and Princeton was 3-5. All three of Virginia Tech's wins came in-conference, at home against three of the ACC's at-large bids, 1-seed Virginia, 3-seed Miami and 10-seed Pitt. The Hokies faced three NCAA Tournament teams out of conference and dropped those three games, to 3-seed West Virginia, 4-seed Iowa State and 8-seed Saint Joseph's. Princeton's wins were against automatic qualifiers, 12-seed Yale, 16-seed Fairleigh Dickinson and 16-seed Hampton, with the Hampton win coming on the road. Princeton's five losses were to 3-seed Miami, 5-seed Maryland, 8-seed Saint Joseph's, 12-seed Yale and 13-seed Stony Brook.
• Though Princeton has never faced Virginia Tech and its only game in Blacksburg was 39 years ago in a 1967 NCAA Tournament win over West Virginia, the Tigers do have a recent history in the state. Princeton swept its last pre-conference games this year at Hampton and Norfolk State, won at Liberty on Jan. 4, 2014, and lost by three points at George Mason on Nov. 16, 2014.
• Mitch Henderson played in three NCAA Tournaments with Princeton, in 1996 (win over UCLA, loss to Mississippi State), 1997 (loss to California) and 1998 (win over UNLV, loss to Michigan State). He coached Northwestern as an assistant in three NITs in 2009 (lost to Tulsa), 2010 (lost to Rhode Island) and 2011 (beat Milwaukee and Boston College, lost to Washington State) before coming to Princeton after the 2011 season. At Princeton, he has coached the Tigers in two CBIs, in 2012 (win over Evansville, loss to Pittsburgh) and 2014 (win over Tulane, loss to Fresno State).
• The Tigers can use this postseason experience as a springboard to next season with 99.3 percent of the team's points and 98.9 percent of the team's minutes coming back. The Hokies are in a similar spot, with just one senior, Shane Henry. The rest of Virginia Tech's players account for 97.6 percent of the team's points and 95.8 percent of the team's minutes.
• The 3-pointer has been a big weapon for Princeton this year, with five players all hitting a least 28 3s on the campaign. Virginia Tech, despite playing five more games than Princeton, has only two players who have made that many 3s. Princeton has made 271 3s this year to the Hokies' 191 and has tried 698 to the Hokies' 595. Virginia Tech has been strong at keeping a relative lid on opponents' 3s this year, holding foes to a .311 clip when Princeton has shot .388 on the season. However, Princeton tries the 3 at a higher rate than the average Virginia Tech opponent. On the season, 42.2 percent of Princeton's field goal tries have come from 3, while 36.7 percent of Virginia Tech's opponents' field goal tries have come from 3. Princeton's 9.7 3s per game would rank first in the ACC (Duke leads at 9.3), while Virginia Tech's .311 3FG percentage defense is second in the ACC (Syracuse, .304) and 30th in the nation. Other than the Hokies leading the ACC in free throws attempted and made, the 3FG percentage defense is the team's best statistical ranking in the conference.
• Speaking of 3s, the Tigers will have to keep an eye on Virginia Tech's Justin Bibbs, who is second in the ACC in 3FG percentage at .471 while tied for ninth in 3s made with 74.
• Being so successful at getting to the line, Virginia Tech is 10-10 when it takes fewer than 32 free throws a game and 9-4 when it takes 32 or more. Only once this season has a Princeton opponent taken more than 27 FTs, when Fairleigh Dickinson took 32 shots and Princeton won by 30 anyway, 91-61.
• A faster pace seems to favor the Tigers against Virginia Tech. When a game is played at at least 73 possessions per 40 minutes, Virginia Tech is 5-8 and Princeton is 9-2. When the pace drops below 65.9 possessions per 40 minutes, Princeton is 2-3 and Virginia Tech is 5-3.
• Princeton is 7-0 when it makes at least 12 3-pointers in a game this season. The Tigers lead the Ivy and are 13th in the nation (entering Tuesday's games) at 9.7 3s per game. Princeton has made 10 3-pointers in a game 16 times this season.
• Virginia Tech is 6-9 when teams make at least eight 3-pointers against the Hokies, and the team is 1-3 when opponents make 10 or more 3s.
• Aside from senior night, Princeton has never deviated from its starting lineup of 6-3 sophomore Amir Bell, 6-4 junior Spencer Weisz, 6-4 junior Henry Caruso, 6-5 junior Steven Cook and 6-11 junior Pete Miller. Virginia Tech has started 11 players this season. Its most recent starting lineup, which has held intact for the last three games, features 6-8 Shane Henry, 6-1 Justin Robinson, 6-5 Justin Bibbs, 6-5 Jalen Hudson and 6-7 Zach LeDay. The Hokies have started two of their three tallest players earlier this season, with 6-10 Kerry Blackshear Jr. starting twice in December and three more times in February, and 7-footer Johnny Hamilton getting four starts in late February and early March before giving way to Henry for the last three games.
• Since a 75-73, triple-overtime win at Florida State on Dec. 30, 2011, Princeton has dropped its last two games against ACC opponents at the time of the game. Wake Forest got Princeton 80-66 on Dec. 31, 2014 in Winston-Salem, and then-No. 13 Miami got the Tigers 76-64 on Dec. 29, 2015 in Coral Gables.
• Virginia Tech has only a brief history against Ivy League teams, and no games against current Ivy League players. The Hokies are 3-1 all-time against the Ivy, losing to Yale in 1967, defeating Brown in 1977, Columbia in 2008 and Brown in 2009.
• Entering Selection Sunday, Princeton's RPI stood at 38, 61 spots higher than Virginia Tech at 89. Princeton only lost two games this season to teams with RPIs lower than 23: Stony Brook at 60 and Harvard at 192. Virginia Tech had just two losses outside the RPI top 100, to Alabama State (265) and Northwestern (112).
• Devin Cannady's 324 points this season already make him the fourth-highest scoring Princeton freshman in the era of freshman eligibility (since 1978-79). He could still do some climbing, with Douglas Davis third at 333 (2008-09) and Spencer Gloger second at 336 (1999-2000). Chris Young holds the freshman scoring record with 387 points in 1998-99.
• Cannady's 54 3-pointers are the third-most by a freshman in program history, behind Brian Earl's 55 in 1996 and Spencer Gloger's 65 in 2000.
• Spencer Weisz has 110 assists for the year and 255 for his career. The single-season number is good for 11th on Princeton's list, with John Thompson III (112, 1986-87), two entries from Nate Walton (113, 1999-2000 and 115, 2000-01), Ian Hummer (115, 2012-13) and T.J. Bray (119, 2011-12) directly in front of him. The career number is 12th, with Armond Hill (260, 1973-76) and Brian Earl (263, 1995-99) directly in front of him on that list.
• Under Mitch Henderson, the Tigers now have a 34-29 (.540) record in the pre-New Year portion of the schedule and a 62-23 (.729) record from Jan. 1 forward.
• Princeton has made at least half its field goal tries 13 times this season and has shot .400 or better from the field 24 times in the season's 28 games, including 14 in a row. The Tigers are 21-3 in those games (losses vs. Maryland, at Yale, at Harvard). The Penn road game was the first and only time this season Princeton won without shooting at least .400 from the field.
• Junior Henry Caruso, who is shooting .527 from the field on the season, has made at least half his field goal tries in 20 of the 28 games this season. Princeton is 16-4 when Caruso makes at least half his tries and 6-2 when he doesn't.
• Princeton enters the postseason as the top team in the Ivy in scoring offense (79.0 ppg), 3FG percentage (.389), defensive rebounds (26.9 drpg) and 3s made per game (9.7). Individually, Princeton has the Ivy's top free throw shooter and 3-point shooter by percentage in Devin Cannady (.884 FT%, .478 3FG%) and the league's top player in assist-to-turnover ratio, with Spencer Weisz at 2.9.
• Entering Monday's games, Princeton was in the top 10 percent nationally (top 34) in six statistical categories, including fourth in fewest fouls (461), ninth in fewest turnovers (304), 15th in 3s per game (9.7), 19th in scoring margin (+11.4 ppg), 24th in winning percentage (.778) and 28th in 3FG percentage (.385). Individually, Devin Cannady, Henry Caruso, Pete Miller and Spencer Weisz combined for nine top-250 statistical rankings, led by Cannady's 20th-best .875 free throw clip.
• Under Mitch Henderson, Princeton has scored 90 points in a game six times. That's more than all other post-Pete Carril coaches combined and the fourth-most under a coach in program history. Princeton scored 90+ 21 times under Pete Carril, 18 times under Butch van Breda Kolff and 11 times under Cappy Cappon.
• Princeton's juniors (Caruso, Cook, Miller, Rayner, Weisz) have scored 1,265 of the team's 2,141 points, or 57.2 percent.
• Princeton has had eight double-doubles this season, including three in one game at Lipscomb, the first time that has happened in program history. Princeton's eight double-doubles this season, by four players (Caruso 3, Cook, Miller 2, Weisz 2) have already surpassed last year's five, which were all by Hans Brase, and are the most since the 2010-11 team had 10 double-doubles by three players. Twenty-six double-doubles, by the 1964-65 and 1966-67 teams, is the program record.

• This will be Virginia Tech's first postseason appearance since the 2011 NIT, when the Hokies, as a No. 1 seed, beat Bethune-Cookman 79-54 before losing to fourth-seeded Wichita State 79-76 in overtime. Wichita State went on to win that year's NIT.
• Virginia Tech had a stretch from late-December to mid-February in which the Hokies lost 10 of 15 games, but the team looks to have rebounded just in time, winning six in a row before losing to Miami in the ACC quarterfinals. Hot shooting seems to have boosed the team, as the Hokies shot below 40 percent in each of four straight games prior to the six-game winning streak but hasn't shot below 44 percent from the field in any game since.
• Virginia Tech is 10-0 this season when opponents score 62 points or fewer. Otherwise, Virginia Tech is 9-14 when opponents pass 62.
• Virginia Tech is in the top 10 percent nationally in three statistical categories: free throw attempts (third, 906), free throws made (fifth, 634) and 3-point FG percentage defense (30th, .311). Zach LeDay, Seth Allen and Justin Bibbs combine for 20 top-250 individual statistical rankings, led by Allen's 49th-most free throws made at 158.

Mitch Henderson '98 is in his fifth season as Princeton's head coach. His overall record at Princeton is 96-52. Under Henderson, Princeton is 53-11 at home, 48-21 in the Ivy League, and 29-5 in the Ivy League at home. Princeton is 79-17 when leading at the half under Henderson. This is the third postseason appearance for Princeton under Henderson, with the first two coming in the CBI in 2012 and 2014. Princeton won its first-round game each time, first at Evansville and then at Tulane, before losing in the second round, first at Pitt and then at Fresno State. Henderson is the first Princeton coach since John Thompson III '88 (2000-04) to have winning seasons in each of his first four campaigns. He is the sixth Princeton coach to accomplish that, following Frederick Leuhring (1912-20), Butch van Breda Kolff '44 (1962-67), Pete Carril (1967-96), Bill Carmody (1996-2000) and Thompson III '88 (2000-04). Henderson is in fifth place on the Princeton all-time wins list after having passed Bill Carmody (92), who was a Princeton assistant for Henderson's first two seasons as a player and head coach for Henderson's last two, with the Feb. 26 win over Columbia. Carmody hired Henderson as an assistant coach at Northwestern in 2000, where Henderson remained for 11 seasons until coming to Princeton. Leuhring, with 100 wins, is in fifth place. Henderson was a second-team All-Ivy Leaguer in 1998, an honorable mention All-Ivy Leaguer in 1997, and was a two-time Ivy Rookie of the Week in 1994-95. Henderson graduated as the fourth-leading assist man in program history (kept since 1974-75) and is now sixth, having been surpassed by two of his players, Ian Hummer '13 and T.J. Bray '14. Henderson graduated fifth in career steals (kept since 1974-75) and is now ninth, having been passed by former teammate Gabe Lewullis '99, Will Venable '05, Marcus Schroeder '10 and his former player T.J. Bray '14. Henderson is one of six Princeton alumni who are current Division I head coaches, including John Thompson III '88 (Georgetown), Joe Scott '87 (Denver), Mike Brennan '94 (American), Chris Mooney '94 (Richmond) and Sydney Johnson '97 (Fairfield). |
