Penn Hands Princeton Ivy-Opening Loss
March 19, 2016 | Men's Lacrosse
Final Stats
About the best the Princeton men's lacrosse team can take away from its Ivy League opener against Penn Saturday afternoon is that the last time Princeton was on the wrong end of a big score, it rebounded in its next game with its best effort of the season.
Penn got five goals each from Simon Mathias and Kevin McGeary and a goal and six assists from Nick Doktor as the Quakers defeated Princeton 20-10 Saturday afternoon in front of 1,245 at Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium. It was Penn's first win ever at the facility, which opened in 1996, and its first win in Princeton since 1988.
Princeton fell to 2-4 on the year and 0-1 in the Ivy League. Penn is now 4-2, 1-0.
The Tigers rebounded from a 17-5 loss to Maryland a week ago to defeat No. 18 Rutgers two days later, with a 10-7 win last Monday. The Tigers hope that pattern repeats itself in a week, when they are at unbeaten and fourth-ranked Yale.
GAME NOTES
* Princeton was led by Austin Sims, who had a career highs with three goals and five points. Sims did not have a goal a year ago as a freshman, but he now has eight in six games this season. His two assists were his first two of the year and matched his previous career total.

* Riley Thompson and Gavin McBride kept alive their scoring streaks. Thompson (1G, 2A) continues to be the only Princeton player with at least one goal in every game this year, while McBride (2G, 1A) extended his streak of consecutive games with at least one point to 21.
