CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (3/26/16) - An illegal stick waved off what would have been a game-tying goal by Harvard and instead gave No. 11 Princeton a 6-5 win on Saturday afternoon at Harvard Stadium.
What would have been the game-tying goal with 50 seconds remaining was called back after Julia Glynn was found to have scored with an illegal stick. The reversal gave Glynn a yellow card, forcing Harvard to play man-down and gave Princeton automatic possession instead of what would have been a draw control.
However, with 21 seconds left, Princeton turned the ball over giving Harvard an opportunity to try to knot the game once again. Marisa Romeo's shot hit the post but Megan Hennessey backed up. On the restart Hennessey went to the goal but junior Ellie DeGarmo made her 14th save of the game with 2.1 seconds left and defender Madeline Rodriguez blocked a second attempt, giving the victory.
Princeton never trailed in the game and took a two-goal edge on two occasions. Junior Olivia Hompe had a four-goal game and scored her 100th career goal on her second goal. Ironically No. 22-clad Hompe is the 22nd player in Princeton history to reach 100 career goals. Sophomore Colby Chanenchuk assisted on three of those four goals. On the other end of the field, DeGarmo made a career-high 14 saves. She had stopped 13 shots twice this season.
The teams traded goals to start the game. Senior Anya Gersoff put Princeton on the board as she converted the game's first free-position attempt, but it was answered 10 seconds later by Glynn. Hompe laced her first goal at 18:11, but Romeo responded less than a minute later to keep the teams tied at 2-2.
Hompe added her second at 14:12 before Elizabeth George sent a bouncing shot between the legs of Kelly Weis to give the Tigers a 4-2 lead at 11:29.
The goalies were showcased over the next seven minutes as DeGarmo made two saves, one a stick save on a free-position attempt, while Weis made four saves on the opposite end.
Nekele McCall was finally able to solve DeGarmo with 4:19 left in the first half. An Alexis Nicolia free-position attempt shot went wide and Eliza Guild caught the shot and fed McCall on the cut. DeGarmo had one more left in her though as she denied Romeo with two seconds left in the first half.
Harvard evened the game at 4-4 as Nicolia net the first goal of the second at 25:42, before the Tigers ended the run with a two-goal run of their own.
Hompe pushed the Tigers ahead 6-4, after connecting with freshman Kathryn Hallett at 21:43, and then had her most brilliant goal of the game at 11:57 as she pulled down a Chanenchuk pass as the cutter and slammed it home.
Two minutes later Maeve McMahon put away a Hennessey pass to inch her team within one, 6-5 at 9:54.
DeGarmo made two low-angle recoveries in the next three minutes to keep her team on top.
Harvard was put in a man-down situation after Marina Burke ran into Gersoff at 4:43 and the Tigers held the ball for nearly three minutes before Hennessey caused a turnover, her third of the game, to give Harvard possession with 1:55 remaining, which resulted in the waved off Glynn goal.
The Princeton defense held Harvard, a team that entered the game averaging 12.85 goals per game to just five goals, and held leading scorer Romeo to just one goal.
Princeton continues its five-game road swing when it travels to Loyola for a mid-week game next week. The teams will face off on Wednesday, March 30 at 7 p.m.
