POTSDAM, N.Y. (3/4/16) - Clarkson's James de Haas scored at 1:05 in the second overtime to give the Golden Knights a 3-2 win over Princeton in Game 1 of the ECAC Hockey first-round playoff series.
de Haas collected a Jeff DiNallo shot that had caroomed off the post and over in front of the Princeton bench. de Haas got by his defender, reached the center dot of the right circle and scored on a high glove-side shot.
The Tigers held a 2-0 lead with goals by freshman Alex Riche and junior Ryan Siiro, as junior defender Quin Pompi assisted on each.
A five-minute major on Spencer Kryczka at 11:16 of the third was the turning point as Clarkson scored on that man-advantage and evened it with 21.9 seconds left after the Tigers took a too many men call at 18:14.
It was the third longest game in Princeton hockey history, at 81:05, and the fourth double overtime ECAC playoff game for the Tigers.
Princeton looked good from the opening puck drop and quickly took the 1-0 lead. Pompi chopped down the puck as Clarkson attempted to clear it out of its own zone. The puck fell ahead to Max Véronneau in the right corner who found Riche in the low slot. He fired once, got his own rebound, and put away the second attempt for his second tally of the season.
Senior Kyle Rankin nearly made it 2-0 when he split his defenders and went in shorthanded on Greg Lewis but his backhander went just wide around the 13-minute mark.
It took more than 12 minutes for Clarkson to get its second shot on goal, as Princeton dominated the first period and finished with an 11-5 shot advantage and the 1-0 lead.
The Tigers would start the second period with a 5-on-3 for nine seconds after Troy Josephs' slashing call and a Kevin Tansey tripping call. Clarkson successfully killed off both penalties and its offense started to come alive before Siiro silenced them with a second strike.
Junior Garrett Skrbich won a draw deep in the Princeton zone back to Pompi and Pompi fed Siiro the puck. Siiro found winger Rankin on the left side and Rankin dished the puck back to Siiro as he raced into the slot and fired high glove on Lewis at 9:46.
Riche tried to net his second of the night at 12:45 of the second but Lewis made the pad save at the right pipe to maintain the two-goal differential. Junior netminder Colton Phinney came up big in the final minute of the second as it started to get a bit scrambly in front of the Princeton net.It remained 2-0 Tigers with shots nearly even when Kryczka delievered a blow on Christian Powers and Clarkson retailated as the teams started to get chippy. Kryczka was sent off for a boarding major while Powers got two for roughing at 11:16.
After two minutes of 4x4, the Green & Gold finally lit the lamp at 13:53 on a Kelly Summers score. The Knights worked the puck around the zone before Summers rifled in the goal from the left point with Terrance Amorosa and Jordan Boucher receiving credit on the assists.
Princeton killed off the remaining 2:23 of the penalty but with two minutes left in the period Clarkson had all the momentum.
An unfortunate too many men call on Princeton with 1:46 left put Clarkson back on the power-play and a two-player advantage as they pulled Lewis in favor of the extra attacker.
A deflection went all the way down the other way and hit the pipe of the open net, nearly giving Princeton a two-goal lead, before it was corralled by the Green & Gold.
Princeton was just 22 seconds away from a win, before Sam Vigneault tied the game with a 6x4 goal with 21.9 seconds left - scoring on the backdoor after a pass from the left point by Amorosa.
It was a scoreless first 20-minute overtime period with shots 12-7 in favor of Clarkson. Princeton's best chance was by Veronneau around the 12-minute mark. Lewis came too far out and the net was wide open but Veronneau couldn't get a clean shot off. With less than two minutes to play The Tigers had another chance on a wild scrum but DiNallo layed on the puck and the whistle was blown.
Phinney finished the game with 43 saves, while Lewis had 29 stops.
These two teams will face off again tomorrow night at 7 p.m., in the best-of-three series.
