![]() Princeton suffered a tough loss at Harvard Friday night, seeing Crimson reserve Patrick Steeves score 25 points as the Tigers struggled to defend at the rim. Princeton held the Crimson to 4 of 9 from distance, had fewer turnovers 13-10 and stayed nearly even in rebounding with just a 31-30 deficit, but the Tigers' 7-of-21 3-point shooting and 20-of-28 free throw shooting were just below what the Tigers needed to overcome the Crimson's success close in at the bucket. |

• Friday's loss at Harvard puts Princeton in a tough spot, for the first time this season needing more than just to win games in order to keep their Ivy title hopes alive. The path forward is simply stated but less so to achieve, with Princeton needing Columbia to trip up Yale Saturday night in Manhattan while Princeton not only defeats Dartmouth but knocks off Penn back in Jadwin Tuesday.
• Princeton has already won more games this year than it did all of last season, now with 20 after 16 wins a year ago. Last Friday's win over Columbia pulled Mitch Henderson, now with 94 wins, past Bill Carmody and into sixth place all-time at Princeton. Henderson is within another good season of climbing all the way to third place, with Frederick Leuhring (1912-20) at 100 wins, Butch van Breda Kolff (1962-67) at 103 and Albert Wittmer (1923-32) at 115. The top two, of course, will require a lot of seasons and a lot of wins, with Franklin "Cappy" Cappon (1938-43, 1946-61) second at 250 wins and Pete Carril (1967-96) first at 514.
• Princeton has had an equal or better record from the first half to the second half of the Ivy season in all four years under Mitch Henderson. In 2012, The Tigers were 4-3 in the first go-round and 6-1 in the second. In 2013, the team was 5-2 in each half. In 2014, the team struggled to a 2-5 start before going 6-1 in the back half. Last season, the team was 4-3 over the first seven and 5-2 over the last seven. So far in 2016, Princeton was 6-1 over the first half and is 4-1 so far over the second half.
• Princeton nailed 25 3-pointers over the Harvard-Dartmouth home weekend last month, a number not unusual for Princeton but one that's high for opponents of the Crimson and the Big Green. Princeton's 13 3-pointers against the Big Green remain an opponent high for Dartmouth this season, but visiting teams have been able to rack up the triples on a few occasions in Leede Arena this winter. Of the six occasions in which Dartmouth opponents hit 10 3s or more, three of those were at Leede, against Hartford, Columbia and Bryant.
• The 3-pointers (13 of 24, .542) and strong shooting overall (28-52, .538) helped Princeton beat Dartmouth 83-70 in Jadwin Gym last month, allowing the Tigers to overcome a slight rebounding disadvantage, 35-31, and committing 10 turnovers to eight for the Big Green. Dartmouth has allowed opponents to shoot .500 or better from the field seven times in 27 games this season and .500 or better from 3-point range four times this season. Princeton, Harvard and Seton Hall are the only opponents common to both categories. While Princeton's shooting clip against the Big Green was on the high end for a Dartmouth opponent this season, the Big Green were among their best at avoiding turnovers when they came to Jadwin. That game was one of only three this season in which Dartmouth didn't turn the ball over at least 10 times, and Dartmouth's median turnover total this season is 14. Princeton's 10 turnovers were much closer to its average of 11.
• Entering Saturday's games, Princeton's RPI was 39th, 13 spots ahead of Yale's at 52nd for the top team in the Ivy.
• Devin Cannady's 304 points this season already make him the fifth-highest scoring Princeton freshman in the era of freshman eligibility (since 1978-79). Given his average of 11.7 points per game, he is on pace to finish fourth on that list with 327 points, with any postseason on top of that. That'd be just short of second and third place, held by Spencer Gloger (336 in 1999-2000) and Douglas Davis (333 in 2008-09). Chris Young holds the freshman scoring record with 387 points in 1998-99. Between Cannady and Davis is John Smyth (319 in 1982-83).
• Under Mitch Henderson, the Tigers now have a 34-29 (.540) record in the pre-New Year portion of the schedule and a 60-23 (.723) record from Jan. 1 forward.
• Princeton has made at least half its field goal tries 12 times this season and has shot .400 or better from the field 22 times in the season's 26 games. The Tigers are 19-3 in those games (losses vs. Maryland, at Yale, at Harvard). The Penn game was the first and only time this season Princeton won without shooting at least .400 from the field.
• Princeton has made 10 3-pointers in a game 15 times this season.
• Junior Henry Caruso, who is shooting .538 from the field on the season, has made at least half his field goal tries in 19 of the 26 games this season. Princeton is 15-4 when Caruso makes at least half his tries and 5-2 when he doesn't.
• Princeton enters Saturday as the top team in the Ivy in scoring offense (79.1 ppg), defensive rebounds (27.3 drpg) and 3s made per game (9.6). Individually, Princeton has the Ivy's top free throw shooter in Devin Cannady (.875) and the league's top player in assist-to-turnover ratio, with Spencer Weisz at 2.9.
• Entering Tuesday's games, Princeton was in the top 10 percent nationally (top 34) in six statistical categories, including fourth in fewest fouls (445), eighth in fewest turnovers (288), 16th in 3s per game (9.6), 20th in scoring margin (+11.2 ppg) and 27th in won-lost percentage (.769). Individually, Devin Cannady, Henry Caruso, Pete Miller and Spencer Weisz combined for seven top-250 statistical rankings, led by Cannady's 20th-best .875 free throw clip.
• Under Mitch Henderson, Princeton has scored 90 points in a game six times. That's more than all other post-Pete Carril coaches combined and the fourth-most under a coach in program history. Princeton scored 90+ 21 times under Pete Carril, 18 times under Butch van Breda Kolff and 11 times under Cappy Cappon.
• Princeton's juniors (Caruso, Cook, Miller, Rayner, Weisz) have scored 1,160 of the team's 2,057 points, or 56.4 percent. Players who are able to return next year have scored 99.3 percent of the team's points (2,042 of 2,057).
• Princeton has had eight double-doubles this season, including three in one game at Lipscomb, the first time that has happened in program history. Princeton's eight double-doubles this season, by four players (Caruso 3, Cook, Miller 2, Weisz 2) have already surpassed last year's five, which were all by Hans Brase, and are the most since the 2010-11 team had 10 double-doubles by three players. Twenty-six double-doubles, by the 1964-65 and 1966-67 teams, is the program record.

• Entering Saturday's games, Dartmouth's top national statistical ranking was 50th in turnovers forced at 14.62/game. Connor Boehm, Evan Boudreax and Malik Gill combined for 14 top-250 statistical recognitions, led by Boudreaux's 31st-best 6.96 defensive rebounds ber game.
• Entering Saturday's games, Dartmouth was the Ivy's best free throw shooting team at .727, and Evan Boudreaux was the Ivy's best defensive rebounder at 7.0 drpg.

Mitch Henderson '98 is in his fifth season as Princeton's head coach. His overall record at Princeton is 94-52. Under Henderson, Princeton is 53-11 at home, 47-21 in the Ivy League, and 29-5 in the Ivy League at home. Princeton is 77-17 when leading at the half under Henderson. Henderson is the first Princeton coach since John Thompson III '88 (2000-04) to have winning seasons in each of his first four campaigns. He is the sixth Princeton coach to accomplish that, following Frederick Leuhring (1912-20), Butch van Breda Kolff '44 (1962-67), Pete Carril (1967-96), Bill Carmody (1996-2000) and Thompson III '88 (2000-04). Henderson is in fifth place on the Princeton all-time wins list at 93 wins after having passed Bill Carmody (92), who was a Princeton assistant for Henderson's first two seasons as a player and head coach for Henderson's last two, with the Feb. 26 win over Columbia. Carmody hired Henderson as an assistant coach at Northwestern in 2000, where Henderson remained for 11 seasons until coming to Princeton. Leuhring, with 100 wins, is in fifth place. Henderson was a second-team All-Ivy Leaguer in 1998, an honorable mention All-Ivy Leaguer in 1997, and was a two-time Ivy Rookie of the Week in 1994-95. Henderson graduated as the fourth-leading assist man in program history (kept since 1974-75) and is now sixth, having been surpassed by two of his players, Ian Hummer '13 and T.J. Bray '14. Henderson graduated fifth in career steals (kept since 1974-75) and is now ninth, having been passed by former teammate Gabe Lewullis '99, Will Venable '05, Marcus Schroeder '10 and his former player T.J. Bray '14. Henderson is one of six Princeton alumni who are current Division I head coaches, including John Thompson III '88 (Georgetown), Joe Scott '87 (Denver), Mike Brennan '94 (American), Chris Mooney '94 (Richmond) and Sydney Johnson '97 (Fairfield). |
