• It's the final regular-season game in Jadwin Gym Tuesday night for the Princeton men's basketball team, and with it comes the Tigers' longtime rival, Penn. Princeton has won seven of nine in the series under Mitch Henderson, and a win would equal him with Butch van Breda Kolff and J. Hill Zahn for the best winning percentage among Princeton coaches against the Quakers, .800.
• Princeton is looking to move to 13-0 at home with a win Tuesday. Though the postseason is pending, it'd be Princeton's first perfect home regular season since the 2010-11 campaign, when Princeton went 12-0 at home, and it'd be Princeton's most home wins without a loss in program history.
• Princeton has already won more games this year than it did all of last season, now with 21 after 16 wins a year ago. Last Friday's win over Columbia pulled Mitch Henderson, now with 94 wins, past Bill Carmody and into sixth place all-time at Princeton. Henderson is within another good season of climbing all the way to third place, with Frederick Leuhring (1912-20) at 100 wins, Butch van Breda Kolff (1962-67) at 103 and Albert Wittmer (1923-32) at 115. The top two, of course, will require a lot of seasons and a lot of wins, with Franklin "Cappy" Cappon (1938-43, 1946-61) second at 250 wins and Pete Carril (1967-96) first at 514.
• Henderson is also just a few wins away from becoming the third-winningest coach against the Quakers. He has seven wins against Penn, and with three more, he'd pass Leuhring, Wittmer and van Breda Kolff, standing only behind Cappon at 22 and Carril at 27.
• Princeton is 7-0 when it makes at least 12 3-pointers in a game this season. The Tigers lead the Ivy and are 15th in the nation (entering Monday's games) at 9.7 3s per game. Princeton has made 10 3-pointers in a game 16 times this season.
• Against Penn, the 3-pointer was less of a weapon for the Tigers. Princeton went just 5 of 15, which tied the second-lowest number of 3s made for the Tigers in a game this season and was the lowest number attempted this season. Penn stands third in the Ivy in 3-point FG percentage defense (.342), and the Quakers' opponents this season have averaged 6.4 3s per game against Penn this season. Only three Penn opponents have hit double-figure 3s against the Quakers this season, all Ivy foes. Brown hit 13, Cornell 12 and Columbia 10.
• Princeton was outshot from the field at Penn (42.6%-38.3%) and from 3-point range (9-23, 39.1%/5-15, 33.3%) and was outrebounded 46-40. Princeton made up some of that by going to the line 30 times to 11 for the Quakers, making 22 to four for Penn, and from Penn's 18 turnovers to 12 for the Tigers. Darien Nelson-Henry (17 pts.), Jackson Donahue (16 pts.) and Jake Silpe (11 pts.) led the Quakers while Amir Bell had a career night with 28 points for Princeton. Specner Weisz and Devin Cannady added 10 apiece while Henry Caruso had 10 boards. The trio of Weisz, Caruso and Steven Cook was 7 of 26 from the field and 0 of 4 from three.
• Entering Monday's games, Princeton's RPI was 38th, five spots ahead of Yale at 43rd as the top team in the Ivy.
• Devin Cannady's 313 points this season already make him the fifth-highest scoring Princeton freshman in the era of freshman eligibility (since 1978-79). He could still do some climbing, with John Smyth fourth at 319 (1982-83), Douglas Davis third at 333 (2008-09) and Spencer Gloger second at 336 (1999-2000). Chris Young holds the freshman scoring record with 387 points in 1998-99.
• Cannady crossed the 50 3-pointer mark over the weekend, now with 53. That's the third-most by a freshman in program history, behind Brian Earl's 55 in 1996 and Spencer Gloger's 65 in 2000.
• Spencer Weisz crossed the 100-assist mark for the season, now with 104 for the year and 249 for his career. The single-season number is good for 15th on Princeton's list, with Chris Young (105, 1999-2000), Brian Earl (108, 1998-99), John Thompson III (108, 1987-88), Michael Steurer (108, 1974-75) and another entry by John Thompson III (112, 1986-87) directly in front of him. The career number is 13th, with Will Venable (253, 2001-05) and Armond Hill (260, 1973-76) and Brian Earl (263, 1995-99) directly in front of him on that list.
• Under Mitch Henderson, the Tigers now have a 34-29 (.540) record in the pre-New Year portion of the schedule and a 61-23 (.726) record from Jan. 1 forward.
• Princeton has made at least half its field goal tries 13 times this season and has shot .400 or better from the field 23 times in the season's 27 games. The Tigers are 20-3 in those games (losses vs. Maryland, at Yale, at Harvard). The Penn game was the first and only time this season Princeton won without shooting at least .400 from the field.
• Junior Henry Caruso, who is shooting .536 from the field on the season, has made at least half his field goal tries in 20 of the 27 games this season. Princeton is 16-4 when Caruso makes at least half his tries and 5-2 when he doesn't.
• Princeton enters Saturday as the top team in the Ivy in scoring offense (79.3 ppg), defensive rebounds (27.1 drpg) and 3s made per game (9.7). Individually, Princeton has the Ivy's top free throw shooter and 3-point shooter by percentage in Devin Cannady (.875 FT%, .477 3FG%) and the league's top player in assist-to-turnover ratio, with Spencer Weisz at 3.0.
• Entering Monday's games, Princeton was in the top 10 percent nationally (top 34) in six statistical categories, including fourth in fewest fouls (461), ninth in fewest turnovers (304), 15th in 3s per game (9.7), 19th in scoring margin (+11.4 ppg), 24th in winning percentage (.778) and 28th in 3FG percentage (.385). Individually, Devin Cannady, Henry Caruso, Pete Miller and Spencer Weisz combined for nine top-250 statistical rankings, led by Cannady's 20th-best .875 free throw clip.
• Under Mitch Henderson, Princeton has scored 90 points in a game six times. That's more than all other post-Pete Carril coaches combined and the fourth-most under a coach in program history. Princeton scored 90+ 21 times under Pete Carril, 18 times under Butch van Breda Kolff and 11 times under Cappy Cappon.
• Princeton's juniors (Caruso, Cook, Miller, Rayner, Weisz) have scored 1,219 of the team's 2,141 points, or 56.9 percent. Players who are able to return next year have scored 99.3 percent of the team's points (2,126 of 2,141).
• Princeton has had eight double-doubles this season, including three in one game at Lipscomb, the first time that has happened in program history. Princeton's eight double-doubles this season, by four players (Caruso 3, Cook, Miller 2, Weisz 2) have already surpassed last year's five, which were all by Hans Brase, and are the most since the 2010-11 team had 10 double-doubles by three players. Twenty-six double-doubles, by the 1964-65 and 1966-67 teams, is the program record.

• Entering Monday's games, Penn's top NCAA statistical ranking, and the Quakers' only entry in the top 10 percent of the nation, was in fewest fouls, where Penn was 19th with 495. Individually, Darien Nelson-Henry, Sam Jones and Jackson Donahue combined for 10 individual top-250 statistical rankings, led by Nelson-Henry's 38th-best .569 field goal percentage.
• In the Ivy, Penn's top statistical ranking was third in 3FG percentage defense, at .342. Nelson-Henry ranked second in the league at with a .569 field goal percentage behind Cornell's Darryl Smith (.649, 98-151). The NCAA has Nelson-Henry first in the Ivy in the category by its minimum of five makes per game, but the Ivy's minimum is appearing in 75 percent of the team's games.

Mitch Henderson '98 is in his fifth season as Princeton's head coach. His overall record at Princeton is 95-52. Under Henderson, Princeton is 53-11 at home, 48-21 in the Ivy League, and 29-5 in the Ivy League at home. Princeton is 78-17 when leading at the half under Henderson. Henderson is the first Princeton coach since John Thompson III '88 (2000-04) to have winning seasons in each of his first four campaigns. He is the sixth Princeton coach to accomplish that, following Frederick Leuhring (1912-20), Butch van Breda Kolff '44 (1962-67), Pete Carril (1967-96), Bill Carmody (1996-2000) and Thompson III '88 (2000-04). Henderson is in fifth place on the Princeton all-time wins list after having passed Bill Carmody (92), who was a Princeton assistant for Henderson's first two seasons as a player and head coach for Henderson's last two, with the Feb. 26 win over Columbia. Carmody hired Henderson as an assistant coach at Northwestern in 2000, where Henderson remained for 11 seasons until coming to Princeton. Leuhring, with 100 wins, is in fifth place. Henderson was a second-team All-Ivy Leaguer in 1998, an honorable mention All-Ivy Leaguer in 1997, and was a two-time Ivy Rookie of the Week in 1994-95. Henderson graduated as the fourth-leading assist man in program history (kept since 1974-75) and is now sixth, having been surpassed by two of his players, Ian Hummer '13 and T.J. Bray '14. Henderson graduated fifth in career steals (kept since 1974-75) and is now ninth, having been passed by former teammate Gabe Lewullis '99, Will Venable '05, Marcus Schroeder '10 and his former player T.J. Bray '14. Henderson is one of six Princeton alumni who are current Division I head coaches, including John Thompson III '88 (Georgetown), Joe Scott '87 (Denver), Mike Brennan '94 (American), Chris Mooney '94 (Richmond) and Sydney Johnson '97 (Fairfield). |
