TIgerBlog On The Princeton Women's Lacrosse Team's Big Week
PRINCETON, N.J. (4/11/16) - No. 11 Princeton will face arguably its toughest opponent of the season when it hosts unbeaten and No. 1 ranked Maryland on Wednesday night. Game time is at 7 p.m., on Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium.
Eye on the TigersPrinceton pounced on Yale this past Saturday in a 16-5 victory to improve to 3-0 in the Ivy League. The Tigers took 50 shots in the game and had seven different goal scorers. Princeton is now 8-2 overall, with both losses to top-10 teams, and is ranked No. 11 in the recent national polls (April 4). Junior Olivia Hompe leads the team offensively with 31 goals and eight assists for 39 points. Sophomore Abby Finkelston has 19 points on 16 goals and three helpers, with senior Anya Gersoff chipping in 13 goals and four assists. Sophomore Ellie McNulty, who had a four-goal game against Yale, has 13 goals and three assists, while classmate Colby Chanenchuk is the main feeder on the team with 13 assists and three goals. Junior defender Madeline Rodriguez has a team-best 18 draw controls, with McNulty picking up 16. Junior Amanda Leavell, senior Liz Bannantine and Rodriguez are each in double figures in caused turnovers. In goal, junior Ellie DeGarmo has the second-best save percentage in the country at .559 and an 8.30 goals against average. DeGarmo also has the most ground balls on the team with 23.
The Series
Maryland holds a 28-8 advantage in the all-time series that dates back to 1979. The Terps have won the last 10 meetings in the series, including an 18-10 game last year. It was a one-goal game, 8-7, the last time Maryland was in town here in 2014. Princeton's last win was a 9-8 game in 2006.
Scouting the Terrapins
The defending national champion Maryland has been the No. 1 ranked team all season long. Unbeaten at 12-0 the Terrapins are led by two-time Tewaaraton Trophy winner Taylor Cummings. Senior Cummings has 44 points on 32 goals and 12 assists. She leads the team in each of the three supplemental statistical categories as well with 77 draw controls, 35 ground balls and 33 caused turnovers. Sophomore Megan Whittle has the most goals, 40 total, and adds one assist. Junior Zoe Stukenberg adds 32 points, while junior Caroline Wannen chips in 26 on a team-high 16 assists. Five others are in double digits in scoring. Freshman Megan Taylor is 11-0 in goal with the third best GAA in the country at 6.11 GAA and a .492 save percentage.
What to Watch
Princeton can capitalize on the fact that Maryland has the most turnovers per game in the country at 10.64 per game. At 56.4 percentage, the Tigers have the best save percentage in the country. How will that match up against the third-best scoring offense in the country in Maryland?
