DeGarmo and Hompe Named Tewaaraton Top-25 Nominees
April 29, 2016 | Women's Lacrosse
WASHINGTON, D.C. (4/29/16) - Juniors Ellie DeGarmo and Olivia Hompe of the Princeton women's lacrosse team have both been announced as top-25 nominees for the 2016 Tewaaraton Award, presented by Under Armour. The Tewaaraton Award is recognized as the pre-eminent lacrosse award, annually honoring the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States.
"The Tiger lacrosse family is super excited to learn that two of our own, Ellie DeGarmo '17 and Olivia Hompe '17, have been recognized as Tewaaraton finalists for their outstanding performances this season," Princeton head coach Chris Sailer said. "Ellie has anchored our team from the back, routinely making difficult saves look easy and playing with consistency and confidence, two of the trademarks of great goalies. Olivia has paced our offense with 50 points, despite drawing face guards and double teams all year long, and has scored five game-winning goals for the Tigers."
DeGarmo leads the nation in save percentage with a .548. She has made double digit saves in eight of 14 games this season including a career-best 16 in a win over Cornell on April 16 just three days after stopping 13 against No. 1 Maryland. The effort earned DeGarmo the Epoch/Lacrosse Magazine National Player of the Week. She has been named the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week three times this year.
Hompe leads the team in scoring with 50 points on 40 goals and 10 assists. She scored her 100th career goal this year, as a junior. Hompe averages 3.57 points per game and has had three or more goals in half of the games she has played this year - highlighted by a six-goal game at Drexel. She has notched two other six-point games this season, versus Gerogetown and at Notre Dame. In addition she has picked up 14 ground balls, won 12 draw controls and caused nine turnovers.
Five finalists from this group will be selected on Thursday, May 12 with the winner being announced on June 2 at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian.
Princeton has had five top-five finalists in program history including Julie Shaner in 2001, Rachael Becker in 2002 and 2003, Theresa Sherry in 2004 and Lindsey Biles in 2005. Defender Becker won the Tewaaraton in 2003.
Princeton plays for its third straight Ivy League title and 11th overall this weekend when it takes on Brown on Saturday, April 30 at 1 p.m.
