BOX SCORE
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (5/6/16) – It's the first season of the sudden victory rule in NCAA women's lacrosse, and in Princeton's first overtime game, it worked against the Tigers. Cornell was awarded the draw after the ball rolled out of bounds and the officials awarded possession to the Big Red. Catherine Ellis scored on that possession at 1:32 to lift her team to a 10-9 win in the Ivy League Tournament semifinal game.
NO. 13 Princeton (11-5) will now have to wait and see if it will receive one of 13 at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament when selections are made for the 26-team field on Sunday evening at 9 p.m.
Junior Olivia Hompe led the offense with four goals, and marked the eighth time she net a hat trick this season. She also led the team with three caused turnovers. Sophomore Colby Chanenchuk had three assists and classmate Camille Sullivan had a goal and an assist. Sophomore Ellie McNulty won four draws, while junior Madeline Rodriguez had two. In goal, junior Ellie DeGarmo made eight saves.
The Tigers had a 4-3 lead at halftime after trailing 3-0 to No. 18 Cornell (12-4) to start the game. Joey Coffy scored two unassisted goals with Amie Dickson notching a free-position goal in between.
Senior Anya Gersoff halted the run the first of four Princeton goals at 22:45. Chanenchuk set up Hompe to make it a one-goal game at 10:18. Junior Lauren Steidl wasted no time getting herself in the stat sheet scoring right off the bench to tie the game 3-3 at 1:20. It was another Chanenchuk to Hompe goal that gave the Tigers the lead with 41 seconds left in the first.
The Tigers run stretched into the second half with Sullivan scoring 27 seconds in followed by Hompe completing her hat trick at 1:11 to give the Tigers a 6-3 lead.
Cornell's Taylor Reed single-handedly carried her team on her back as she scored three times in a span of 4:43 to push her team back within one, 7-6 with 23:36 to play.
Olivia Mattyasovszky knotted it at 7-7 at 19:13 on a feed from Emily Tripodi as the team's traded goals for the remainder of the game.
Freshman Elizabeth George notched her ninth of the season with help from Sullivan at 9:31 before Mattyasovszky tallied her second on a free-position attempt at 6:04 to make it 8-8.
Another Chanenchuk to Hompe goal at 4:47 put Princeton back on top.
DeGarmo made a big save with three minutes to play and Princeton had the ball before Cornell picked it off with 1:32 to play and called timeout before attempting to clear. After Princeton was fouled outside of the fan, the Big Red continued to work the ball around and with 17 seconds left Tripodi made a quick dodge and scored with 17 seconds left to tie the game.
After a lengthy discussion, Tripodi's stick was deemed legal and Princeton won the ensuing draw but time expired before the Tigers could make anything happened offensively.
Cornell had a one-shot advantage, 21-20 while ground balls were even 16-16. Cornell had a 12-9 edge in draw controls, while had an 11-7 advantage in caused turnovers.
Cornell will face the winner of Penn/Harvard in the Ivy League Championship game on Sunday at 11 a.m.
