VIDEO: Cara Mattaliano, 2015 Ivy Champ and POY, Leads Volleyball Into Ivy Chase Saturday At The Palestra
September 22, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
Cara Mattaliano will never forget the 2015 Ivy League volleyball season, but she doesn't exactly want to relive the whole thing this fall.
Mattaliano, the 2015 Ivy League Player of the Year, led Princeton to its 15th Ivy League championship in historic fashion last fall; the Tigers became the first team in league history — any sport, either gender — to rally from an 0-3 deficit to win the Ivy title. She ranked in the Top 3 in the league in both kills and points, and she was the only Top 10 hitter to also rank in the Top 10 in digs as well.
She did it all, she did it well, but she'd much rather do it the easier way this season.
In other words, she'd like to get off to a better start.
And that start comes Saturday.
Princeton (6-3) will head to the Palestra Saturday night to open its 2016 Ivy League season against the Penn Quakers (5-7) in one of the Ivy League's best rivalries. Princeton leads the all-time series 55-36 and has won of its last six meetings at the Palestra, but the Quakers got the jump on their 2015 Ivy season with a 3-1 win over the Tigers in Dillon Gym. Fans can watch the match live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
Mattaliano averaged 17 kills and 15.5 digs in the two matches over Penn, including a 3-1 win at the Palestra that ignited Princeton's 7-0 championship finish in Ivy play. The current Ivy League leader in kills, she is coming off an all-tournament performance in a Tiger sweep of the Rutgers Tournament, and she has guided Princeton to four straight wins.
But it's a new season, which she knows as well as anybody. She knows what it takes to win in this league.
And she'd like to start doing it even earlier this season.
