Youthful Men's Volleyball Squad Opens 2017 Season At Hawaii's Outrigger Invitational
January 03, 2017 | Men's Volleyball
The Princeton men's volleyball team heads to the site of its proudest moment in program history this weekend, and it will do so with a young roster hoping to lay the foundation for a similar run in the future.
Princeton will open its 2017 schedule with three matches this week during the 23rd annual Outrigger Resorts Volleyball Invitational, held at the Stan Sheriff Center at the University of Hawai'i — site of the Tigers' 1998 NCAA semifinal match against Pepperdine. The 2017 Tigers, who brought in a nationally ranked recruiting class this past year, will test itself against two nationally ranked programs over the three days — No. 7 Hawaii and No. 15 Ball State.
"We are so excited to make the trip out to Hawaii to play in the prestigious 23rd annual Outrigger Tournament," head coach Sam Shweisky said. "It is a great honor to have been invited and we can't wait to experience the great culture of Hawaii, as well as the high-level volleyball. Hawaiians are known for being knowledgeable fans, and we can't wait to play in the historic Stan Sherriff Center, site of our 1998 NCAA semifinal against Pepperdine. This tournament is a great opportunity to play against a top MPSF team in Hawaii, a top MIVA team in Ball State, and a top Conference Carolina team in Erskine."
Princeton will open competition Thursday at 4 pm local (9 pm ET) against the 15th-ranked Cardinals of Ball State, and then will take on the host Rainbow Warriors Friday at 7 pm local (midnight ET). The finale takes place Saturday at 4 pm local (9 pm ET) against Erskine. There will be no live stream for the matches, but live stats are available at HawaiiAthletics.com.
Shweisky will have an opportunity to test a variety of lineups with his young squad over the three days, though former All-EIVA middle blocker Junior Oboh figures to be a go-to player for Princeton this season. Billy Andrew and Trey Sickler will compete for that other middle position, though freshman George Huhmann could be one of the most highly touted Princeton recruits to ever come in at the position. Huhmann, a 6-11 standout from St. Louis, was a 2016 VolleyballMag.com Boys' Fab 50 selection who helped lead the USA Junior National Team to a victory at the 2016 NORCECA Under-21 Continental Championship, a win that qualified Team USA for the 2017 FIVB U-21 World Championship in Prague.
Junior Kendall Ratter and freshmen Greg Luck and Parker Dixon will all compete on the outside. Ratter, an explosive hitter and one of the team's top servers over the last two years, brings in added experience, but both Luck and Dixon are athletic and talented players who could make an early impact. Junior Mike Fuerst and senior Kurt Thiemann should compete at the opposite position while sophomore Matthew Nicholas battles back from an injury-plagued freshman year. Senior Jonah May and freshman Shane Gooding will each have opportunities to prove themselves at setter, while sophomore Corry Short should open the season at libero.
