Volleyball Team Pushes No. 2 UCLA, Falls After Tight Final Sets
January 30, 2017 | Men's Volleyball
Sam Shweisky's young Princeton squad may be 0-3 against ranked opposition early this season, but his team has shown an ability and willingness to go toe-to-toe with some of the best teams in the nation on multiple occasions.
A few weeks after dropping a 21-19 heartbreaker to No. 15 Ball State in the 2017 season opener, Princeton began its annual post-Finals California trip with a 25-15, 25-23, 27-25 loss to the No. 2 UCLA Bruins. After shaking off the rust of more than two weeks off in the opening set, the Tigers (2-3) pushed the Bruins (9-1) to the limit — and in the case of the final set, beyond — before taking the loss.
It was a good sign for Shweisky, who was able to see his projected starting lineup for only the second time this season. Senior setter Jonah May, who suffered an injury against Ball State, returned to the court and paced the offense with 27 assists, while freshman Greg Luck moved back to the outside after rehabbing an injured hand.
Princeton was led by junior Kendall Ratter, who had a match-high 14 kills and hit .360. Luck added six kills and seven digs, while the Princeton middle duo of All-EIVA junior Junior Oboh and freshman George Huhmann combined for 13 kills, four blocks and only three hitting errors. May added nine digs, while libero Corry Short had six.
Princeton returns to the court Wednesday night to take on UC-San Diego.
