Though it's not quite spring, the Princeton women's lacrosse team and its alums were quite busy this weekend, as both head coach Chris Sailer and Olivia Hompe '17 were honored at two distinct ceremonies.
On Saturday, the current Princeton team made its way down to the US Lacrosse headquarters in Baltimore. On hand were dozens of Princeton alums as Chris Sailer Trail was officially dedicated. Part of the day included games against three teams that all have been impacted by Sailer including: Villanova, coached by Julie (Shaner) Young who was a three-time All-America and Tewaaraton finalist at Princeton; Fairfield with two Princeton alums on its staff including head coach Laura Field '00 and Anne Murray '09; and NYAC that has a roster of five former Tigers - Lizzy Drumm '11, Sarah Lloyd '14, Caroline Rehfuss '13, Mary Kate Sivilli '14 and Erin Tochihara '11. On that same day in Indianapolis, Tewaaraton Trophy finalist Olivia Hompe '17 was attending the NCAA Woman of the Year event. Hompe was chosen as one of 30 finalists for the 2017 NCAA Woman of the Year. The day before the awards banquet, the 30 finalists gathered together for a day that included t-shirt exchange that expanded into a round table discussion, conversations with NCAA leaders and a community event.

Â
"What an incredible weekend!," Sailer said. "To have the Trail at US Lacrosse dedicated in my name while surrounded by my team, alumni, parents, family and friends was an unforgettable, moving and humbling life experience. I couldn't be more grateful to Kristen Mautner Garlinghouse '89 for honoring me in such a profound and enduring way with her gift to US Lacrosse. To share the Chris Sailer Trail with 11 strong, impactful women Trailblazers who tirelessly advocated for equitable opportunities for players and coaches in collegiate women's lacrosse, gives me great joy. And to end the weekend watching Olivia Hompe '17, be honored at the NCAA Woman of the Year Banquet in Indianapolis, the lone Top 30 honoree from the sport of lacrosse, was the icing on the cake – a very proud moment for me as a coach and for all Tigers. No doubt, Olivia and I have the Trailblazers to thank for laying the foundation decades ago that gave rise to the opportunities we have had as player and coach to thrive and achieve in this great game."  Â
Hompe will join Sailer on the Princeton sidelines this upcoming season as a graduate assistant coach. The Tigers look to build off their fourth consecutive Ivy League championships as the season gets underway on Feb. 17 at Temple.
