Princeton Earns ECAC Point in Scoreless Tie With Colgate
November 03, 2017 | Men's Ice Hockey
The sight of Princeton and Colgate as they played a tight, low-scoring, give-nothing hockey game on the ice of Hobey Baker Rink wasn't really all that new.
The Tigers and Raiders picked up right where they left off last March, when they played a riveting three-game ECAC playoff series that featured three one-goal games before Princeton advanced.
This time it was the first game of the long ECAC regular season. Unlike March, there was nothing separating the two on this night, as they played to a 0-0 tie, the first for the Tigers in 12 years and the first for the Raiders in nine years.
Charlie Finn and Colton Phinney both graduated, taking more than 6,000 combined saves with them. This time, it was Princeton freshman Ryan Ferland and Colgate sophomore Colton Point in net.
In all there were 79 shots thrown at the two, and all 79 were turned aside. Both goalies made huge saves at time, including three hold-your-breath moments where Ferland came up huge in the third period and then big stops by both in the overtime.
Point would finish with 43 saves, while Ferland had 36 and his first shutout in just his second game.
