Resilient Tigers Close Out Cornell In 6-3 Thriller, End Seven-Year Drought In Ithaca
February 10, 2017 | Men's Squash
It had been seven years since Princeton won a match in Ithaca. For head coach Sean Wilkinson, it probably felt like seven years since his team had won a close match.
Both droughts ended Friday night for a young men's squash team that continues to show how much it has improved over the course of the year.
Throughout the 2016-17 season, the 10th-ranked Tigershave proven time and again that they have closed the gap on some of the elite teams in college squash. They had lost either 5-4 or 6-3 to teams ranked fifth, sixth, eighth, and ninth in the CSA over the last month, so the next step for Princeton was to find a way to win a close match.
They did so Friday night at the Belkin Squash Courts, where Princeton hadn't won since 2010. Sophomore William Oon won a 13-11 thriller in the third game at the No. 9 position to secure the fourth team win of the season for Princeton, which returns to Jadwin Sunday at 2:30 pm to take on third-ranked Columbia on the Ivy League Digital Network. Freshman Adhitya Raghavan picked up a wild 3-2 win of his own at the No. 1 spot to close the match, as he topped Harry Freeman 11-9 in the fifth game to finish the 6-3 win.
Princeton, which has now won back-to-back road matches, sprinted out of the gates with four straight wins. Junior co-captain Abhimanyu Shah grabbed an 11-7, 11-9, 11-9 win at the No. 5 spot, while freshman Henry Parkurst picked up his first Ivy League win with a 3-2 victory at No. 9.
Sophomore Cody Cortes improved to 6-0 in the Ivy League with another incredible five-game thriller. A 16-14 win in the third helped him push it to five, and he defeated Perry Hanson 11-8 in the fifth for his ninth win of the season. Freshman Shehab Thabet added a 3-0 win at No. 5 to move Princeton — playing without two starters Friday night — to the brink of victory.
Cornell battled back for three wins, including tight matches at No. 2 and No. 7, but Oon made sure the momentum didn't get too far away. After back-to-back 11-8 wins, he closed out Ian Rothweiler 13-11 to secure the win.
