Men's Squash Team Concludes Ivy Slate With NY Duo, Including Columbia Match On Senior Day
February 09, 2017 | Men's Squash
LIVE VIDEO: Columbia at Princeton (Sunday, 2:30 pm)
The resilient Princeton men's squash team, which nearly stunned the fifth-ranked Drexel Dragons Wednesday night at the Jadwin Squash Courts, will try to cap its Ivy League season in impressive fashion this weekend. The Tigers will open play Friday night at the Belkin Squash Courts in Ithaca against the Cornell Big Red, and they will host national championship contender Columbia Sunday at 2:30 pm.
Tenth-ranked Princeton (3-8, 1-4 Ivy) has fallen short in a trio of 5-4 or 6-3 matches to teams ranked fifth, sixth, eighth, and ninth over the last month, but it has continued to battle against the best teams in the country. Sophomore Cody Cortes, winner of six straight matches, bring a team-best record of 8-3 into the weekend, while freshman Gabriel Morgan ranks second on the team with six wins.
The 11th-ranked Cornell Big Red (6-8, 1-4 Ivy) has posted a winning home record this season. The Princeton-Cornell matches have been thrillers over the last four years, but the Big Red has had the late answers each time. Cornell enters this weekend with four straight wins over Princeton — three by 5-4 scores, and one by a 6-3 margin. Each of the last two matches at the Belkin Squash Courts have been 5-4 Cornell wins.
Third-ranked Columbia (9-2, 4-1 Ivy) has established itself as a legitimate contender for the CSA championship this season. Its only two losses have come to the top two teams in the nation, Harvard and Trinity, and it has won two straight over Princeton. Sunday's match, which will follow the women's matchup with Columbia, will be streamed live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
Princeton will honor its lone senior, Ben Leizman, prior to the Columbia match, which will be his final one at the Jadwin Squash Courts. Leizman, a co-captain for the 2016-17 Tigers, has 24 career victories for Princeton.
