Women's Squash Team Picks Up 10th Win, Tops Cornell 7-2
February 10, 2017 | Women's Squash
The fourth-ranked Princeton women's squash team improved to 10-2 overall, 4-2 in the Ivy League, with an impressive 7-2 win over seventh-ranked Cornell Friday night at the Belkin Squash Courts. As it has done most of the season, the Tigers used their impressive depth to carry the way for their third straight win.
Princeton won 18 of 19 individual games between the fourth and ninth spots in the victory at Cornell, though there were several hard-fought 3-0 wins in that mix. Senior Gabriella Garr was pushed at the No. 4 spot, but she had the late answers in a 12-10, 11-7, 11-8 win. Junior Olivia Fiechter also had a strong showing at the No. 1 position, where she topped Michele Garceau 3-0.
Princeton will return home Sunday at noon to conclude its Ivy League season against eighth-ranked Columbia. The Tigers will honor their Class of 2017 — Gabriella Garr, Ashley Richards, Alexandra Toth, and Maria Elena Ubina — prior to that match.
QUOTES FOLLOWING THE CORNELL WIN
"Today was a great win for the Tigers. Cornell is always a strong team that can't be underestimated, so it was really important for all of us to use our momentum from last weekend's wins to our advantage and play some of our best squash today. I think everyone looked really sharp out there and should be feeling really psyched for our match against Columbia Sunday. After having some tough matches recently, I was really excited to play well and pull out a 3-0 win for the team. Michelle is a strong player and has had some impressive wins this season, so I think that this match will go a long way for my confidence going into our match on Sunday, as well as the end of the season."
- Olivia Fiechter
"This was a great win for us. Cornell is a strong team and I'm really proud of how well everyone played today. I had some trouble getting the ball into the back of the court when I was playing but now I have something to focus on during our next match against Columbia."
- Morgan Steelman
"With a strong win over Cornell, I think we showed up as a team prepared for anything that came our way. Each player ran after every single ball despite our long travel time and the unfamiliar court setting. Personally, I felt really loose and confident on court as I played Colby Gallagher, Cornell's number 9. We are looking forward to facing Columbia on our own courts Sunday, where we all intend to have our best match ever. As my freshman season is coming to an end, I reflect on the strong leadership from our upperclassmen that kept our team positive and energetic, despite the many injuries that players on our team have faced. I'm looking forward to see how strong we come together as a team and fight for the wins in our last few matches before the Howe Cup closes the season."
