Princeton Picked To Repeat as Ivy Champion
February 14, 2017 | Women's Lacrosse
The Princeton women's lacrosse team has been picked to repeat as the Ivy League champion in 2017. In the inaugural first Ivy League Preseason Media Poll, Princeton earned nine first-place votes and 120 points.
Penn was selected second with 111 points and five first-place votes, while Cornell took the final two first-place votes and earned 97 points. The poll continued with Harvard (83), Dartmouth (56), Yale (48), Columbia (34) and Brown (27).
"It's nice to see the nod of respect from the Ivy media, giving Princeton the league's top pre-season ranking," head coach Chris Sailer said. "It's clearly a reflection on the strength of our recent campaigns and the quality of our returning players. At the same time, we know that the only ranking that matters is the last one. The league promises to be extremely competitive again this year, and the team that wins the title will be challenged game in and game out to perform its best. We're excited for the challenge and eager to get our season underway this weekend against Temple."Â
The Tigers are ranked No. 13 in the Intercollegiate Lacrosse Women's Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll and are No. 12 in the first Inside Lacrosse poll of the season. Three Tigers were named preseason All-America, including the 2016 Markland Goalkeeper of the Year Ellie DeGarmo, 2016 All-America Olivia Hompe - who were both Tewaaraton Top-25 nominees, as well as second-team All-Ivy League defender Amanda Leavell.
Last year, Princeton won its 12th Ivy League title and third straight. With an 11-6 record the Tigers earned an at-large bid the NCAA Tournament to make its 24 appearance in program history.
The squad opens the season on Saturday, Feb. 18 hosting Temple at noon on Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium.
