An impressive finish by the 400 medley relay closed a strong Friday for the Princeton women's swimming & diving team, which remained in third place going into the final day of the 2017 Ivy League Championships.
The quartet of Christie Chong, Olivia Chan, Isabel Reis, and Maddy Veith (pictured) finished third in the 400 medley relay, the final event of third day of the Ivy Championships. Princeton posted a time of 3:40.50, more than three seconds faster than fourth-place Columbia.
Princeton holds a seven-point lead over fourth-place Penn with 662 points. Yale, the regular season dual meet champion, leads the Ivy Championships with 1103 points, while Harvard is second with 1035.5 points.
Prior to her strong relay, Reis posted Princeton's first top-five individual finish of the weekend, as she took fifth in the 100 fly in 53.96. That time barely topped classmate Joanna Curry, who finished sixth in the same event in 54.01. Freshman Elaine Zhou added a 'B' final win in 54.39 to give Princeton additional team points. Princeton would get two more top-five finishes in the 200 free. Junior Claire McIlmail edged into the 'A' final and ultimately finished eighth in 1:49.03, while sophomore Elaina Gu took 10th in a time of 1:49.08.
Senior Olivia Chan finished sixth in the 100 breast in 1:02.19, while Zhou added her second Top-10 finish with a 10th-place time of 1:03.43. Christie Chong gave the Princeton Class of 2020 a second 'B' final victory of the night. The Tiger freshman took the 100 back consolation final in 55.07, while classmate Gianna Garcia finished 13th in 55.59.
One day after Harvard and Yale claimed all eight spots in the 1-meter diving 'A' final, the Princeton divers made sure that Saturday's 3-meter final would have a three-team feel. Freshman Natasha MacManus was the fifth qualifier with 268.30 points, while senior Lisa Li advanced to her final championship event with 250.40 points. Li grabbed the final spot in the 'A' final by fewer than five points.
The 3-meter consolation final was held Friday, and sophomore Carolyn MacFarlane finished fifth with 246.55 points, while senior Deborah Daly concluded her Tiger career with a seventh-place finish of 242.40 points.
The final day of the Ivy League Championships will begin with an 11 am preliminary session. The finals will start at 6 pm.
