Tigers Claim First Win In Boston Since 2010, Fend Off Harvard Rally In Five-Set Thriller
February 24, 2017 | Men's Volleyball
Another night, another step forward for the Princeton men's volleyball team. And this step came somewhere outside of Dillon Gym.
Princeton moved into first place in the EIVA by itself Friday night by holding off a Harvard rally in a 25-20, 25-20, 20-25, 17-25, 15-10 win over the Crimson. That victory, combined with a 3-1 victory for NJIT over Sacred Heart, leaves Princeton as the only one-loss team in conference play. The Tigers will try to remain in that position Saturday at 4 pm when they head to Fairfield, Conn., to take on the Pioneers to complete their first road weekend.
Reigning AVCA National Player of the Week Parker Dixon led Princeton with 18 kills, but it was a highly efficient hitting performance by the middle duo of Junior Oboh and George Huhmann that helped pace Princeton to its first victory at Harvard since 2010. Oboh had 15 kills on 29 swings (.448), while Huhmann added 12 kills on 21 swings (.476); Huhmann, the reigning EIVA Defensive Player of the Week, added seven blocks in the victory.
While Dixon and Huhmann were both coming off big performances last week, a third member of the Class of 2020 had a huge impact in the win. Freshman Greg Luck had 10 kills on 22 swings (.409), and he matched teammate Kendall Ratter with a team-best six digs.
After Princeton raced out to a 2-0 lead with back-to-back 25-20 wins, Harvard bounced back with two of its own to force yet another five-set match in a young EIVA season that has been filled with them. Besides a 3-2 deficit, Princeton led throughout the majority of the finale, and it built a three-point lead on a three-man block by Huhmann, Luck and senior setter Jonah May. After both teams sided out twice, Princeton earned a match ball on a Harvard hitting error, and it finished the win on a Dixon kill.
May had 53 assists in the win; after never recording a 50-assist match over his first 3+ seasons, he now has five in Princeton's last seven matches.
