Princeton's Turnaround Season Ends in Overtime
March 11, 2017 | Men's Ice Hockey
The way the 2016-17 Tigers have played this year there was no doubt that a must-win Game 2 of the ECAC Quarterfinals was going to be entertaining. Overcoming deficits, knocking off top-ranked teams, it was an exciting season for Princeton and they pushed the throttle tonight.
Pushed to the limit, as they were in Game 2 in the first-round series, the Tigers found a way to battle back. And they did just that again tonight. Down 2-0, the Tigers scored three straight to force overtime.
In a heartbreaking finish, the season came to a close on a penalty shot.
After what seemed like an eternity, the officials, came out of the box and waved off a delayed penalty goal by Brett Supinkski due to goaltender inference. The result however was a penalty shot for the player who went crashing into Colton Phinney – and that was Union's leading scorer Mike Vecchione.
"It was an unfortunate ending to a season that was filled with great moments that have moved this program in a positive direction," Princeton head coach Ron Fogarty said. "I am proud of the resiliency and determination that the 28 players displayed each and every day they showed up at the rink. The coaching staff greatly appreciates the leadership and character of the graduating senior class."
Union tallied two goals in a span of 1:31 in the first period. Nick DeSimone got around his defender in a quick transition play and squeezed the puck under Phinney. Cole Maier received credit for the second goal as he deflected in a Spencer Foo shot.
Princeton came within one with a power-play goal by junior David Hallisey at 12:08 of the second. Josh Teves skated the puck down the left side and he and Cressey did work in the corner to get the puck to the high slot where Hallisey released a rocket straight past Alex Sakellaropoulos.
Outshooting the Dutchmen, the Tigers continued to put pucks on net in the third. With 10 seconds left on the power play the Tigers converted again – this time it was sophomore Ryan Kuffner with the goal. Sophomore Max Véronneau cycled the puck around the right side, put the puck right between two Union players for Hallisey in the slot and he fed Kuffner on the right doorstep to make it 2-2 at 15:22 of the third.
Sophomore Alex Riche gave the Tigers life with a goal at 18:50, with Teves and Kuffner assisting as the Tigers took their first lead 3-2. Just 1:10 away from getting the win.
With the extra skater on, Foo was left open on the right side after a Tiger went down on the other side of the ice and Sebastian Vidmar was making his way to the goal. Foo read the Vidmar backdoor pass and in went the game-tying goal with 21.8 seconds left.
Princeton had a 42-38 edge in shots on goal, and was 2 for 5 on the power play.
Phinney, who set an a number of records during his career as a Tiger, made 34 saves in his final appearance in the Orange & Black.
Sakellaropoulos stopped 39 shots as Union advances to the ECAC semifinals.
