Volleyball Completes First Half Of EIVA Season With Weekend Home Pair vs. Charleston
March 02, 2017 | Men's Volleyball
EIVA LINKS: Standings l League Leaders
WEEKEND MATCH LINKS: Live Video l Live Stats
The wild first half of the EIVA season will conclude this weekend for Princeton when it hosts Charleston for two matches this weekend, both of which can be seen live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
Princeton (6-7, 4-2 EIVA) currently shares second place in the league with Sacred Heart, though every team in the league has at least two losses heading into the weekend. Penn State (11-6, 6-2) doesn't play a league match this weekend, so a perfect weekend would land the Tigers back into a share of first place with the Nittany Lions at the conclusion of the weekend.
Charleston will be looking to break through for its first league win of the season, though it did take its first set in EIVA play last weekend against Saint Francis. The Golden Eagles became the newest member of the EIVA when they joined last year; based on distance and a lack of travel partner, Princeton and Charleston have agreed to play two matches at the same site each year, with the home team rotating annually. The Tigers swept both on the road last year, and they will be looking to do the same in Dillon Gym this weekend.
Dillon Gym hasn't lacked excitement already this season; Princeton is 4-1 at home, including 3-1 against EIVA opponents. Following a split of five-set matches against Saint Francis and Penn State, the Tigers announced themselves as a real league contender with back-to-back 3-1 wins over NJIT and George Mason.
While freshman Parker Dixon earned the AVCA National Player of the Week honors following those two wins, classmate George Huhmann also took a big step forward in February. After not recording a single match with double-digit kills in January, he did so four times last month, and he added two more with nine kills. A former EIVA Defensive Player of the Week, Huhmann is currently sixth in the EIVA with 0.93 blocks per set. He ranks just below the EIWA minimum for attacks/set to qualify for the league leaders in attack percentage (he averaged 3.95; the minimum is 4.00), but his current percentage of .352 would lead the league by .32 — which is greater than the current gap between the top-ranked hitter (Penn State's Chris Nugent) and the sixth-ranked hitter (Princeton's Parker Dixon).
