Volleyball Opens Tough Spring Break Trip At #3 BYU
March 20, 2017 | Men's Volleyball
Members of the Princeton men's volleyball team just dealt with a week of mid-terms on the academic side of their lives. Now they will deal with a week of mid-terms on the athletic side.
Princeton (9-8, 6-3 EIVA) will take a break from league play over Spring Break on campus and travel west to play three matches against teams either in or just outside the latest AVCA Top 15. These tests will have the Tigers primed for their final five-match sprint towards a spot in the EIVA postseason.
Princeton faces its most daunting opponent Tuesday night, as the Tigers head to Provo, Utah, to face the third-ranked BYU Cougars (19-2), a team that has won 13 consecutive matches. In its last 11 wins, BYU has won 33 of 35 individual sets, including each of its last 13.
This will be the second trip to Provo for a Princeton volleyball team this academic year; the Ivy League champion Princeton women drew BYU in the first round of the NCAA Championships; the Tigers played two tight sets but ultimately fell 3-0.
Following Tuesday's match, the Tigers will head to Phoenix to take on Grand Canyon, which is the top team receiving votes outside the AVCA Top 15. The Antelopes (14-8) will host Princeton both Thursday and Friday (6 pm local/8 pm ET) in Antelope Gymnasium.
Links for both live stats and live video for all three matches can be found on the team schedule page.
Princeton continues to be pushed by a talented freshman class, including former AVCA National Player of the Week Parker Dixon, who leads the Tigers with 2.95 kills per set. The Tigers have three freshmen averaging at least 2.0 kills per set (George Huhmann and Greg Luck); Huhmann also ranks in the EIVA Top 5 in both hitting percentage (2nd, .360) and blocks (4th, 0.98).
The only player in the EIVA with a better hitting percentage than Huhmann is his position-mate, Junior Oboh, who leads the EIVA and ranks 10th in the NCAA with a .417 percentage.
Following the week, Princeton will return to EIVA play with a weekend pair at Penn State and Saint Francis.
