Saint Francis Edges Princeton 3-2
April 01, 2017 | Men's Volleyball
Despite 17 kills by junior Kendall Ratter and a highly efficient team offensive performance (.381), the Princeton men's volleyball team suffered a second straight heartbreaker Saturday night at Saint Francis. One night after dropping a 19-17 fifth-set decision at #13 Penn State, the Tigers fell 15-13 in the fifth set against the Red Flash.
The loss drops Princeton to 10-12 overall, 6-5 in the EIVA, while Saint Francis improved to 11-14, 6-4. The Tigers have three league road matches remaining — including the final two at home — and will likely need a strong finish to keep its postseason hopes alive.
This match took on a similar feel as the Friday loss at Penn State, as Princeton came out strong with an opening-set win. Saint Francis bounced back with the next two, but a 5-0 run on the serve of Junior Oboh pushed the Tigers to a significant lead in the fourth. Princeton rode that momentum to a 25-19 win, but it was never able to build more than an early one-point lead in the fifth. The Red Flash scored two straight to open a 7-5 lead midway through, and the two teams sided out the rest of the way until the home team finished the five-set win.
Freshman middle George Huhmann followed his 12-block performance at Penn State with 11 kills, five blocks and a .714 hitting performance Saturday, while classmate Greg Luck added 10 kills, four digs, and three blocks. Oboh had seven kills without an error, and he added five blocks, while senior Jonah May had 38 assists.
Princeton will travel to reigning EIVA champion George Mason next Saturday (7 pm) for the final road match of the regular season.
