Men's Hockey Team Honors Seniors, Announces Award Winners & Captains at Team Banquet
April 26, 2017 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON, N.J. (4/26/17) - The Princeton men's hockey team held its team banquet on Friday night to honor its seniors, celebrate its season and present year-end awards.
The Class of 2017: Hayden Anderson, Tommy Davis, Ben Foster, Colton Phinney, Quin Pompi, Ryan Siiro and Garrett Skrbich were honored for their dedication to the program
Princeton finished with a 15-16-3 overall record, matching its number of wins over the last three years. The Tigers, predicted to finish 12th in the league took seventh in the ECAC and won their first playoff series since 2009, to advance to the quarterfinals. The Tigers were one of the most improved teams in the country this season: after starting 0-6-1, the Tigers then went 7-2-1 in their turnaround season that saw them grab home ice for the playoffs for the first time since 2012. The squad earned six NCAA Top Plays during the year as it nearly doubled its offensive output from 2015-16 to 2016-17, scoring 43 more goals (103-06). The program also recorded 178 assists, the seventh most assists in a single season at Princeton.
The first award of the night, the Hobey Baker Trophy, was given to Jackson Cressey. The trophy is awarded annually to the team's freshman hockey player who, among his classmates, in play, sportsmanship and influence has contributed most to the sport, and has been handed out in each since 1950. A finalist for ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Year, Cressey tallied 33 points and led the team in assists with 26. His 33 points is the fifth most collected by a Princeton rookie in his debut, while he ranks eighth in the nation in points per game for rookies. Cressey led the league rookie's in scoring in conference games with 23 points on five goals and 18 assists. He had nine multiple-point games for the Tigers. Cressey had an eight-game point scoring streak during Princeton's December run, and had another seven-game streak in February - which helped him earn the ECAC Rookie of the Month in both December and February.
Sophomore Max Véronneau was awarded the Blackwell Trophy. Given to the member of the team who in play, sportsmanship and influence has contributed most to the sport. Véronneau finished second on the team in scoring with 35 points on 11 goals and 24 assists. He led the nation in scoring two straight weeks during the season, helping him earn two ECAC Player of the Week honors and the league's December Player of the Month. In addition he was named the NCAA Ice Hockey first star of the week on Dec. 13, one week after being named the nation's third star. A second-team All-ECAC and All-Ivy League selection, Véronneau's most memorable goal of the season was the overtime game winner against Colgate in Game 2 of the ECAC first-round series.
The Richard E. Vaughan Cup is awarded to the varsity player who best exemplifies perseverance and dedication to Princeton Hockey. This year it was presented to senior Hayden Anderson. Anderson played in in eight games on defense this season and completes his career with five points in 46 games.
For the second straight season, the Tucker Ironman Award was given to Joe Grabowski. Presented to the member of the team who best exemplifies the Ironman spirit through his off-season preparation, commitment to conditioning and overall physical endurance. Grabowski played in 31 games on defense and finished the season with seven points and tallied the game-winning goal in a 4-1 win at No. 7 Bemidji in November.
Guiding the Tigers in 2017-18 will be newly named captains rising seniors Eric Robinson and Grabowski.
