Hompe Named to England's World Cup Roster
April 04, 2017 | Women's Lacrosse
Tewaaraton nominee and All-America Olivia Hompe of the Princeton women's lacrosse team has been named the 2017 England National Team it was announced last week. The national team will compete at the 2017 FIL Rathbones Women's Lacrosse World Cup this July, as the host nation.
"I went over to England in September right before school started for a training weekend to try out for the team," Hompe said. "I played in a tournament down in Baltimore one weekend in the fall where it was the U.S./England/Australia/Canada, which was an amazing opportunity to get the chance to grow closer with the team and get experience playing for England. Since then, I also was able to make it over for a training weekend in January while Princeton was on break. Although I haven't spent a great deal of time with the women on the team, everyone has been so welcoming and done a great deal to reach out to me, congratulating me on our Princeton team's success so far this season. I'm really looking forward to going over there in June to start training with the team in the lead-up to the World Cup in July. I am so honored to have been chosen to represent England, and having the chance to compete at the international level is an incredible opportunity."
Hompe holds dual citizenship as does the rest of the Hompe family. Mother Amanda '83 is a British citizen and Hompe's two older sisters Xandra and Eliza '14 were both born in London.
"We're so excited about the news that Olivia will be playing for Team England in the FIL World Cup Championships this summer," Princeton head coach Chris Sailer said. "She has travelled to the UK numerous times over the past year to try out and train with the squad, and I'm sure their coaches saw the same traits in Liv that have made her such a dominant player on our team and in the US college game for the past four years. Team England will certainly benefit from Olivia's advanced and diverse skill set on attack as well as from her competitive spirit and drive to win. I'm happy that she gets the chance to showcase her dynamic play on the world stage, and our staff is looking forward to cheering on Liv and her fellow teammate Nonie Andersen '19, who will be playing for Team Ireland, this summer."
Also on the roster are former NCAA players Megan Whittle, Camilla Hayes and Laura Merrifield (Maryland), Chloe Chan (George Mason), Ashleigh Gloster (Cornell), Lucy Lynch (James Madison), Jenny Simpson (UNH).
