Tigers Score 20 in 15-Goal Win Over Harvard, 20-5
April 08, 2017 | Women's Lacrosse
No. 7 Princeton dominated both ends of the field in a 20-5 win over Harvard on Saturday, April 8 on Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium.
Princeton's 20 goals are the most goals scored by the Tigers since the 2005 season, when Princeton defeated Harvard 21-12 on April 16. This marked Princeton's largest margin of victory over Harvard in the 43-year series history.
Senior Olivia Hompe had a six-point game with five goals and one assist, while junior Colby Chanenchuk had a five-assist game. Freshman Tess D'Orsi scored three goals and added an assist and nine other players had at least one point. Senior Ellie DeGarmo made nine saves as the Tigers improve to 8-1 overall and stay unbeaten in Ivy League play at 3-0.
What was a 3-3 game at 15:57 of the first, the tables turned as Princeton took control of the game scoring three straight to take a 6-3 lead. After Caroline Garrity net a goal for Harvard (6-5, 3-1) at 6:57 it was all Princeton as the Tigers went on an 11-goal run through the second half. Princeton allowed just one goal in the second half while scoring 10 itself.
During the run, Hompe net three goals in a span of 3:05 and which moved her into third place on Princeton's all-time goals scored list with 164 tallies. She surpassed both Theresa Sherry and Lisa Rebane this afternoon and is now 11 back from Lindsey Biles' 175.
Also making a move up the scoring list is D'Orsi who is now ranked 8th in goals scored by a freshman with 28 goals.
Princeton outshot Harvard 30-26 and had a 21-13 advantage in ground balls. Harvard won the draw control battle, 16-10 thanks to a 10-5 differential in the first half.
The Crimson were physical, getting called for six yellow cards in the game and the Tigers converted on half.
The Princeton defense was spectacular, holding leading scorer Marisa Romeo with one assist. The senior attacker entered the game with 49 points this season. Harvard, a team that averaged 13.80 goals per game was shut down by the Tigers' defense - in particular Madeline Rodriguez, Alex Argo and Amanda Leavell as they held the Crimson to just 12 shots on goals in the game and just five goals. The trio also combined for three caused turnovers, five draws and five ground balls.
Harvard's Meredith Brown played 45:33 and made five stops on 17 shots, while Olivia Gundrum made one save on nine shots as the Crimson dropped their first Ivy League game of the season.
Princeton will hit the road for the next four games with its first game at No. 1 Maryland on Wednesday April 12. Game time is at 7 p.m.
