In the week before free agency Friday begins, two Princeton hockey standouts have negotiated contracts with their current clubs.
Mike Condon '13 and the Ottawa Senators agreed to a three-year contract extension on Wednesday, worth an average $2.4 million per season.
During the past season, Condon set the Senators franchise record for consecutive starts when he had a stretch of 27. He helped to move the team up in the standings, and the Senators laid claim to a spot in the Eastern Conference finals. Overall, Condon played in 40 games in 2016-17 and posted a 19-14-6 record with five shutouts, a .914 save percentage and a 2.48 goals against average.
"Throughout the whole negotiating process I iterated that I wanted to stay in Ottawa," Condon said. "I love the fit, I love everything about it and I didn't really want to go anywhere else."
Sens general manager Pierre Dorion said, "Any team that has success, you need good goaltending. I think you need two good goalies and for us, among all the pending UFAs Mike was definitely the priority. We saw last year that a team like Pittsburgh has two good goalies and they need both in the playoffs so getting Mike signed is definitely a big day for our organization. Dorian continued, "You always want to get the player for as little as possible but we knew that this was the price to pay to get Mike signed and we're very happy to get him for this type of money and this type of term."
At Princeton, Condon played in 53 games and posted an 18-22-8 record. He holds the program record for best save percentage, with a .917 and the third-best goals against in history with a 2.67. A second-team All-Ivy League selection as senior, he was also a two-time ECAC All-Academic honoree. One his more notably performances was a 57-save game at Union during his junior year - the fourth most saves in a game in Princeton's 100+ year history.
The announcement comes a year after the pair agreed to a one-year deal.
Fedun played in 27 games with the Sabres in 2016-17 and had seven assists and a team-best +3 on-ice rating. He led the Sabres defensemen in assists per game with 1.16 and was 5-for-5 on shot attempts percentage (53.7) which ranked 23rd among all NHL defensemen with more than five games played in 2016-17. Fedun also appeared in 29 games for AHL affiliate Rochester Americans, where he had 23 points on 18 assists and five goals. His .79 points per game were the most by Amerks defenders and ranked him fifth among all AHL defenders with at least five games played.
An All-America at Princeton, Fedun played in 127 career games. He scored 20 goals and 48 assists for 68 points. He is also +41 and has accumulated 154 penalty minutes. As a senior and team captain, Fedun had 22 points on 10 goals and 12 assists in 29 games from the blue line. Additional accolades include first-team All-ECAC, first-team All-Ivy, second-team All-ECAC, second-team All-Ivy, three-time ECAC All-Academic team selection. Fedun left Princeton as part of the winningest class in program history with 72 wins in four years.
Fedun shattered his femur in what would have been his debut season in the NHL, in 2011-12 with Edmonton in a preseason game with Minnesota.
