Andersen's World Cup Blog
July 15, 2017 | Women's Lacrosse
Throughout the next couple of weeks, Princeton rising junior Nonie Andersen will chronicle her time at the Women's Lacrosse World Cup, as a member of Team Ireland. Here is her first post:
Before leaving for the Women's Lacrosse World Cup in Surrey this summer to represent Ireland, my mom wrote me a note. Here is an excerpt:
"You carry with you the history of the Irish people – a history of people who loved God and loved freedom. That love of freedom took many to other shores for a better life for themselves and their children, where they worked hard, endured much and flourished despite the odds against them. Their spirit, their tenacity, their joy in the face of challenge, is in in your blood and will carry you through these games."
As I walked across the field during the opening ceremony yesterday, with my teammates behind me, in front of me and all around me, with the flag of Ireland waving high, I felt that spirit and tenacity surging through our entire program. From the beginning of our training camp in Dublin on July 5, the Ireland Women's Lacrosse Team worked hard to become better lacrosse players and athletes. With that effort bringing us to the world cup, excitement was in the air. We have only been together a short time, but already we are building strong friendships and connections.
This week, we will play New Zealand, Colombia and Sweden in pool play, before moving on to bracketed play, and while my competitive spirit is looking forward to demolishing each new opponent, I remember why I play Ireland lacrosse. I play for the spirit of the game and I play to grow the game. I play for my teammates, coaches, trainers and those working hard for the Ireland lacrosse program. I play to have fun, to represent the Princeton Tiger family that includes Olivia Hompe representing England and my new coach Kerrin Maurer representing Italy, and I play for incredibly unique cultural experience that few get the opportunity to have.
In the coming blog posts, I hope to bring the Tiger Lacrosse fan base along with me on this awesome journey. To follow more closely follow @IrelandWLax on Instagram and Twitter.
