Kyle Hagel '08 was named assistant coach of the Seattle Thunderbirds on Thursday, July 20.
A major junior organization, the Thunderbirds won the 2017 Western Hockey League championship.
Hagel played nine seasons professionally, most recently with the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL where he spent the last three seasons. Hagel won the Yanick Dupré Memorial Award as the 2014-15 IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year, and has been his team's nomination five times.
Playing in more than 450 professional games as both a forward and a defenseman, Hagel spent the majority of his playing career in the AHL. His career started after his senior season at Princeton concluded in 2008, as a member of the Fresno Falcons of the ECHL. He also played for the Reading Royals (ECHL, 08-09), Rochester Americans (AHL 08-09), Las Vegas Wranglers (ECHL 09-10), Rockford IceHogs (AHL 09-11), Peoria Rivermen (AHL 11-12), Hamilton Bullogs (AHL 12-13), Portland Pirates (AHL 13-14) and Charlotte from 2014-17.
In total Hagel played in 373 career AHL games and had 43 points and 1,001 penalty minutes. In 80 ECHL games, he tallied 28 points and 220 penalty minutes.
"My family and I are super excited to join the T-Birds," Hagel said in the Thunderbirds press release. "I owe a big thank you to Russ Farwell and Matt O'Dette for bringing me onboard," said Hagel. "I am anxious to start working with our players to help them become 200-foot hockey players and quality young men. Most importantly, it's super exciting to help build a team that believes in each other."
At Princeton, Hagel played in 117 games and was an assistant captain his senior year when the Tigers won the ECAC Championship with a 21-14 record to advance to the NCAA Tournament. He was a three-time ECAC Hockey All-Academic Team honoree, and was also an Academic All-Ivy League selection.
