Tigers End 10-Year Road Drought, Knock Off Yale To Remain Unbeaten In Ivies
September 30, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
A decade was long enough.
The two-time defending Ivy League champion Princeton women's volleyball team had the biggest statement win of the 2017 league season so far, as the Tigers battled back from an early deficit to knock off Yale 3-1 in New Haven and remain one of two unbeatens (Harvard) in Ivy League play.
How significant was this one?
• Princeton hadn't beaten Yale in New Haven since 2007.
• Yale entered the match having won 18 straight home Ivy matches, a stretch that included Princeton's only league loss last season.
• Yale had won 55 of its last 56 Ivy home matches entering Saturday's match.
Ivy League kills and points leader Natasha Skov proved she could handle the big moment, as she poured in a match-best 16 kills in the 23-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-22 win. However, its was the play of middle duo Nnenna Ibe and Caroline Sklaver that may have made the biggest difference. Ibe continued her Ivy surge with 10 kills, a .714 hitting percentage (10-0-14), and five blocks, while Sklaver had 11 kills, five digs, and three blocks during the win.
A trio of All-Ivy sophomores also had big roles. Setter Jessie Harris, the Ivy leader in assists, posted a double-double with 49 assists and 14 digs (to go along with five kills on eight swings), while both Maggie O'Connell and Devon Peterkin added nine kills apiece.
"It was so exciting and such a great feeling," Huber said after picking up her first win at Yale. "Everyone really rose to the challenge and we really executed our game plan. We really just focused on being engaged every single point. It was a great weekend and we are looking forward to Harvard and Dartmouth."
The senior co-captain duo of Maddie Huber and Kelly Matthews made sure they would get that long-awaited road win at Yale by leading a strong defensive charge. Huber had a team-best 16 digs, while Matthews matched freshman Lauren Flaming with 12 digs.
Princeton returns home for a pair of Ivy matches next weekend, including a potential first-place showdown Saturday night. The Tigers will open with a Friday night (7 pm) showdown against Dartmouth, and then will face Harvard Saturday at 5 pm; both matches will be streamed live on the Ivy League Network.
