Men's Squash Opens Ivy Slate With Brown Sweep, Prepares For Sunday Yale Showdown
January 13, 2018 | Men's Squash
The Princeton men's squash team got off to its first 1-0 start in Ivy League competition since 2013, and now the seventh-ranked Tigers will look to make some real noise as it enters the most challenging part of their schedule. Princeton improved its win streak to four Saturday afternoon with a 9-0 sweep of Brown.
Princeton (6-1, 1-0 Ivy) won six matches by 3-0 scores, including a dominant win for junior Cody Cortes at the No. 5 spot. Cortes won his eighth straight Ivy League match — he was a perfect 7-0 in 2017 — by dropping only 11 points in his victory. The only player even more efficient with his play was senior co-captain Komron Shayegan, who dropped only nine points in a 3-0 win at No. 9.
Four Tiger freshmen made their Ivy League debut, including Alex Engstrom, who won the match of the day at No. 8. Engstrom, no stranger to marathon matches already in his career, rallied from a 2-1 hole with a 12-10 win in the fourth, and he finished Harrison Boyer 11-4 in the fifth.
Princeton will now turn its attention to eighth-ranked Yale, which fell at Penn Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs have won five straight over Princeton, including a 6-3 win in New Haven last year.
