Princeton Looks For Quick Start To Ivy Play In Home Weekend vs. Brown, Yale
January 11, 2018 | Men's Squash
The seventh-ranked Princeton men's squash team generated plenty of momentum with a strong start to its 2017-18 season, and now it wants to take that same mentality into Ivy League play. The Tigers, who haven't won an Ivy League opener since 2013, will try to break that trend this weekend when they host both Brown (Saturday, 2:30) and Yale (Sunday, 2:30) in a pair of matches set to be streamed on the Ivy League Network.
All courts will be streamed live in both matches. You can access all the courts for both days here.
Princeton (5-1) made a strong statement early in both its victories and its lone defeat. The Tigers' five wins during the 2017 portion of the season nearly matched their total win output through all of last season (including the CSA championships), and it included wins over a pair of teams vying for a spot in the 'A' flight at the 2018 Championships, Drexel and George Washington. Princeton's lone loss came by a narrow 5-4 score to third-ranked St. Lawrence, which is unbeaten and will face No. 2 Harvard this week.
Freshman Youssef Ibrahim has more than lived up to his early expectations; the former U-17 British Junior Open champion is 6-0, including a thrilling 3-2 win over St. Lawrence's Ahmed Bayoumy. The entire freshman class has provided an infusion of talent, as well as plenty of wins. Ibrahim, Cole Becker, Duncan Joyce and Alex Engstrom have combined to win 20 of their 23 matches this season, and 17 of those victories have come by 3-0 scores.
Princeton has two other players with undefeated records so far, including senior co-captain Abhimany Shah, the only other player on the roster who can match Ibrahim's 6-0 record. Junior Clark Doyle, who dealt with a plethora of injuries last season, has looked terrific this season with five victories, including a 3-1 win at the No. 5 spot against St. Lawrence.
Yale and Brown opened the Ivy League season against each other in December, a match the Bulldogs won 8-1. While Princeton and Brown will face each other Saturday, Yale will be in Philadelphia taking on the fifth-ranked Quakers.
