Schreiber Named To U.S. Team For 2018 World Championships
January 07, 2018 | Men's Lacrosse
Schreiber was one of 23 players named to the U.S. team for the 2018 FIL World Championships, to be held July 12-21 in Netanya, Israel. The final 23-player roster was announced by Team USA head coach John Danowski, also the head coach at Duke.
"I'm thankful for the opportunity," said Schreiber. "It's an honor to be selected, and I'm excited for this summer."
The U.S. team has finished first or second in all 12 prior World Championship events, though Canada has won two of the last three, including in 2014 in Denver. This will be Schreiber's first appearance in the World Championship event.
The announcement of the team came after a lengthy tryout process that culminated in a scrimmage in Florida Saturday, one that ironically Schreiber missed due to a Toronto Rock National Lacrosse League game, one in which he scored five goals and had seven assists in a 24-7 win over Vancouver. Schreiber's selection was hardly a surprise given his status in the sport, which includes back-to-back Major League Lacrosse MVP awards, an MLL team championship and an NLL Rookie of the Year Award. Both Inside Lacrosse and US Lacrosse Magazine currently have Schreiber featured on their covers with stories calling him the best player in the world right now.
Schreiber is a 2014 Princeton grad who was a three-time first-team All-America. His 200 career points lead all Princeton midfielders in program history.
In addition to Schreiber, two former Princeton assistant coaches were named to the U.S. team. Jesse Bernhardt, who is now at Maryland, and Kevin Unterstein, who is now at Hofstra, will also represent the United States in Israel.
Zach Currier, a 2017 grad, is still in the running for a spot on the Canadian team, which has not yet been announced.
