Princeton Completes California Trip With Loss To Pomona-Pitzer, Sits No. 17 in Varsity Poll

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Princeton Tigers completed their California trip with a 15-12 overtime loss to the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens at Haldeman Pool on Wednesday evening.
Wyatt Benson recorded the only goal for Princeton in the first quarter as the two top-20 squads were tied at 1-all after eight minutes. It took Keller Maloney just 17 seconds into the next frame to give the Tigers a lead as he whipped in a shot on a man-up situation. Tallies from Benson and Matt Payne had the road unit up by three before taking a 5-3 advantage into the break.
After Pomona-Pitzer opened up the second half with a goal at the 5:32 mark, Princeton pitched a shutout for the rest of the stanza, scoring twice during that span. As the final quarter got started, each team posted goals before three straight from the Sagehens tied the score at 8-all with 3:43 left. Pomona-Pitzer held a lead for 23 seconds before Payne registered his third goal of the night. Neither team could find the game-winner in regulation, sending the contest into overtime.
The first portion of the overtime belonged to Pomona-Pitzer has it got on the board with the first two tallies, taking a 11-9 advantage. Alec Mendelsohn and Maloney scored in the period for Princeton, but the Tigers trailed, 12-11, after three minutes. Michael Swart tied the non-conference meeting at 12-all with 2:25 to go, but the Sagehens recorded the final three goals and earned a wild 15-12 decision.

USC is still the top team in the country in front of Stanford, Calif., UCLA and Pacific. Harvard is the top school from the Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC). Princeton's opponent on Sunday (Nov. 4), St. Francis-Brooklyn is No. 18.
Head coach Dustin Litvak's team finishes the 2018 regular season at DeNunzio Pool on Sunday (Nov. 4) against St. Francis-Brooklyn (12 p.m.) and Iona (6 p.m.) Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
