No. 17 Princeton Secures NWPC Tournament 3rd Seed With Two Wins On Senior Day

PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 17 Princeton Tigers honored its seniors with two victories to finish the regular season, defeating the No. 18 St. Francis-Brooklyn Terriers, 10-8, and the Iona Gaels, 14-10, at DeNunzio Pool on Sunday.

St. Francis-Brooklyn picked up the first two goals of the game, but a goal from Matt Payne got the Tigers within one after eight minutes. The second quarter saw three ties including a 4-4 standoff at the break.
Princeton took its first lead of the contest as Wyatt Benson secured the first tally of the second half. The two conference foes exchanged rallies before goals from Alec Mendelsohn and Mitchell Cooper gave Princeton an 8-6 lead after three frames. Tallies from Benson and Mendelsohn put the Tigers in front by three (10-7) with 5:18 left in the matchup. Billy Motherway and the Tigers' defense allowed just one goal the rest of the way to improve to 5-4 in the NWPC.

After allowing the first goal of the game, Princeton pitched a shutout for the next 12:51 of game time. During that span, the Tigers registered five goals. The home squad headed into the intermission with a 6-3 lead.
Three consecutive tallies for Princeton pushed its advantage to five, 9-4, as the clock ticked near three minutes to go in the third quarter. Wyatt Benson's goal with 1:21 remaining gave the Tigers a 10-6 lead after 24 minutes.
Princeton ripped off three of the first four goals of the fourth stanza, extending its lead to six with under six minutes remaining. Iona got within three, but P.J. Greenbaum registered his first career tally to wrap up the scoring.
The Princeton Tigers will be the No. 3 seed in the Northeast Water Polo Conference Tournament (Nov. 16-18) and take on Iona on Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. The winner of that contest battles No. 2 seeded St. Francis-Brooklyn on Saturday (Nov. 17) at 3 p.m. The loser will play for fifth place on Saturday at 1 p.m.
