PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 18 Princeton Tigers are set for the Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) Tournament at Brown University this weekend.
The Tigers are the No. 3 seed in the NWPC Tournament and will take on the No. 6 seeded Iona Gaels on Friday (Nov. 16) at 2 p.m. The winner of that game moves on to No. 2 St. Francis-Brooklyn on Saturday (Nov. 17) at 3 p.m. The championship contest is Sunday (Nov. 18) at 12:30 p.m. Each game is on ESPN+.
Princeton sits at 16-10 overall in 2018. After going 1-4 on the California trip with all four losses to ranked foes, the Tigers wrapped up the regular season with two conference victories over St. Francis-Brooklyn and Iona. The Tigers are 2-0 this season against Iona, earning a 11-8 decision on the road behind a six-point performance from Keller Maloney and a 14-10 win at home with a five-point outing from Matt Payne leading the way.
Payne's 67 goals leads the Tigers and are tied for ninth most in a single-season in program history. He is 13 shy of matching the record of 80 tallies set by Christopher Gratian in 2000. Payne has 232 goals in his career, fifth highest all-time. He's added 39 assists, 44 drawn ejections, 16 steals and 10 blocks as well. Princeton has eight players with at least 20 goals this season. One of those players, Ryan Wilson, has a team-best 41 assists. Wilson has the program record for career helpers with 213. Maloney is the only player on the Tigers with at least 30 goals, 20 assists, 20 steals and 20 drawn ejections.
Top six remained the same in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Varsity Poll as USC took the top spot. UCLA, Stanford, Cal., and UC-Santa Barbara round out top five. Harvard is the top NWPC school in the poll at No. 12 followed by Brown at No. 16.
