Virginia Upsets Injury-Depleted Princeton In Opener
November 11, 2018 | Men's Squash
Princeton went into Sunday's season opener at an emerging Virginia program without three starters, and that missing depth hurt the Tigers in a 5-4 road loss. The freshman tandem of Daelum Mawji and Howe Cheng both won their collegiate debuts, and both Gabriel Morgan and Alex Engstrom added wins, but Virginia took matches at both the top and bottom of the ladder to claim the 5-4 win.
Mawji grabbed a tough four-game match at the #2 spot, which included wins of 11-7 and 11-9 to grab a 2-0 lead, while Cheng had a similarly close opening two games in a 3-1 win at the #5 spot. Engstrom went the distance at #4 and closed it with a 12-10 win in the fifth, while Morgan closed his match at #5 with a dominant 11-1 win.
Princeton will now turn its attention to next weekend, which opens at the University Club in New York City with a match against Trinity. On Sunday, the Tigers will face George Washington in a 3 pm home match at the Jadwin Squash Courts.
