Kuffner and Veronneau Score But Tigers Lose in Overtime
December 08, 2018 | Men's Ice Hockey
Seniors Ryan Kuffner and Max Véronneau both got back on track in the goal column but No. 19 Arizona State spoiled the comeback with a 3-2 win in overtime on Saturday night at Hobey Baker Rink.
Down 2-0 after the first period the Tigers started off the second period on the right foot, scoring just nine seconds in. Off the opening face off win by senior Alex Riche, Véronneau batted the puck down the wall to Kuffner. Kuffner went over the blocker of Joey Daccord for his ninth goal of the season.
Two minutes later Princeton had the game knotted at 2-2 as Véronneau scored on the power play. Senior Josh Teves started the break out behind the Princeton goal and outlet to Jackson Cressey who found Véronneau across the ice. Véronneau came in from the blue line, floated by four Sun Devils and tucked the puck under the cross bar.
The Tigers continued to throw pucks on the net but couldn't get a lucky bounce. Just two minute into overtime Mark Paolini rang a shot off the cross bar before the Sun Devils took the puck the other way and scored off a rebound scrum at 2:46.
Sophomore Ryan Ferland made 28 saves in net for Princeton, while Daccord had 36 for Arizona State.
Princeton was 1 for 3 on the power play while ASU was 1 for 2.
Kuffer is now fourth all-time at Princeton in goals with 62, five back from the leader John Cook '63. Véronneau's assist tonight gives him 80, fourth all-time just one away from tying Jeff Halpern '99. Overall, Kuffner ranks fifth in points at Princeton with 125 and with 122 Véronneau is seventh.
The Tigers face No. 9 Penn State next Saturday, Dec. 15 at the Wells Fargo Center. Game time is at 7:30 p.m. Click here to purchase tickets
