Seniors Shah, Shayegan Lead Princeton Past Cornell In Jadwin Finale
February 11, 2018 | Men's Squash
Seniors Abhimanyu Shah and Komron Shayegan have helped lead Princeton from its lowest point in decades to a team on the rise, and the Tigers honored their senior leaders with a strong performance throughout the lineup on Senior Day Sunday in Jadwin. The seventh-ranked Tigers took another big step in returning to the 'A' flight for the CSA Championships for the first time since 2013 with a 9-0 sweep of the Cornell Big Red.
Both Shah and Shayegan helped clinch the Tigers' ninth win of the season, as the senior duo took wins at the #7 and #8 spots, respectively. Shah dropped his opening game, but he lost only five total points in the final three to win 3-1. Shayegan played a couple tight games, but he won the key points late in a 3-0 win over Sebastian Obieta-Chichizola.
The match of the day belonged to freshman Cole Becker, who took on Jordan Brail in a thriller at the #3 position. Becker took the first and third games to build two different leads, and he powered through Brail in the finale for an 11-3 win.
Princeton will take on two more likely 'A' flight teams in the regular season finale next weekend. The Tigers will open Friday night at 6 pm in Hartford against the top-ranked Trinity Bantams, and they will remain on the Trinity courts Saturday for a 3 pm match against Rochester.
