CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEWS: Meet Preview l Video Interview with Joanna Curry
Two events, two program records for the Princeton women's swimming and diving team at the 2018 Ivy League Championships. The 200 medley relay and the 800 free relay both broke team records — including one record that held strong for a decade — and earned second-team All-Ivy League honors to close an exciting first night at the league championships.
Princeton closed the brief first night in third place overall with 112 points, while both reigning champion Yale and the host Harvard Crimson share the lead with 118 points. Brown is fourth with 102 points.
The meet opened with the 200 medley relay, and the Princeton quartet of Izzy Reis, Jenny Ma, Elsa Welshofer, and Maddy Veith took second in 1:39.29. Yale took the race by about two seconds, but the Tigers held off the host Crimson for second place, which clinches All-Ivy League honors for the Tiger four. The time of 1:39.29 topped the former Princeton record of 1:39.66, set at the 2013 Ivy League Championships.
Princeton wasn't finished updating its record board. Reis led off an 800 free relay that included Claire McIlmail, Joanna Curry, and Monica McGrath, and that group broke a 10-year team record by nearly four seconds when it finished second in 7:08.58. That previous record of 7:12.53 was set by the 2008 Tigers (Meredith Monroe, Justina DiFazio, Alicia Aemisegger, and Brett Shiflett), which was also Princeton's most recent All-America relay.
This relay was good enough for second behind Harvard, and it topped Yale by nearly four seconds; last year, Princeton didn't defeat Yale in a single relay at the Ivy League Championships.
The Ivy League Championships continue Thursday with the traditional prelims/finals format. The prelims begin at 11 am, and the finals start at 6 pm; both sessions will be streamed on the Ivy League Network.
