Princeton Looks To Build On PSU Thriller, Opens Home-And-Home With NJIT Friday In Dillon Gym
March 08, 2018 | Men's Volleyball
The Princeton men's volleyball team played like the team head coach Sam Shweisky believed it could be Saturday night, and it ignited a wild celebration in Dillon Gym as the Tigers fought off eight match balls and stunned 10th-ranked Penn State in a 3-2 thriller.
By Monday, Shweisky and the Tigers were back to work, trying to make sure that Princeton team is the one that shows up the rest of the season.
Princeton, which was 0-4 in EIVA play less than two weeks ago, has a chance to move back into the top half of the league standings this week as it faces a home-and-home series with NJIT. The two teams will open play Friday at 7 pm in Dillon Gym, and then will head to Newark Saturday at 7 pm for the rematch. A Tiger sweep this weekend would move them to 5-4, ahead of both the idle Charleston and Saint Francis squads for fourth place in the EIVA.
WEEKEND LINKS
Princeton has won three straight during this five-match homestand, and sophomore George Huhmann has played a major role in that stretch. The reigning EIVA Newcomer of the Year was named both the EIVA Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week following his spectacular efforts in wins over both Saint Francis and 10th-ranked Penn State. He averaged more than four kills and nearly six points per set in the two matches, and he added 17 total blocks — including nine in the wild comeback win over Penn State — eight digs, three service aces and two assists. Huhmann hit .541 for the weekend, including a .667 mark in the Tigers' second win over Penn State since the 1998 season; the sophomore had 24 kills with only two errors — including the match-clinching swing — on 33 attacks against the Nittany Lions.
Huhmann is only the third player since 2012 to sweep both the Offensive and Defensive honors in the same week.
NJIT (3-11, 1-4 EIVA) is led by middle hitter Alvaro Gimeno, who ranks second in the EIVA with 3.33 kills per set. Gimeno and Raymond Kowalski are among the top five in the league in service aces, and NJIT ranks third overall as a team in that category in conference matches.
Prior to Friday's match, Princeton will be hosting a clinic open to any boys in high school from 4:45-5:45 pm in Dillon Gym.
