With EIVA Playoffs Magic Number At 1, Princeton Heads To Penn State, Saint Francis
April 12, 2018 | Men's Volleyball
The math has become far less complicated for a Princeton men's volleyball team that has worked its way out of an early hole in impressive fashion. With one victory this weekend, the Tigers will return to the EIVA playoffs.
Princeton (10-14, 6-6 EIVA) heads to the Keystone State to face both Penn State (Friday, 7 pm) and Saint Francis (Saturday, 4 pm) in the final matches of the regular season. A victory in either would assure the Tigers the fourth and final spot in the league playoffs, which would be the following weekend at either George Mason or Harvard (the Crimson can take the top spot by sweeping the Patriots at George Mason this weekend).

The Tigers enter the weekend with a two-match lead over both Charleston and NJIT in the EIVA standings. NJIT is Princeton's travel partner and will also face both Saint Francis and Penn State, but the Tigers swept the season series and would win a tiebreaker against the Highlanders.
The opposite is true for Charleston, and that's where the weekend gets tricky if Princeton doesn't take care of business. Charleston swept both Princeton and Saint Francis to get to 4-8 in league play, and it hosts a Sacred Heart team this weekend that has only won one match in EIVA play. Due to the season sweep, Charleston would win the tiebreaker over Princeton if both teams end the season with matching 6-8 records.
Princeton can't do anything about what happens in West Virginia, but it can make sure it doesn't matter by repeating its efforts against both Penn State and Saint Francis from earlier this season. No win this year (or several before it) was as impactful as the 3-2 comeback win over Penn State, when Princeton fought off eight match balls on its way to a five-set thriller. Sophomore George Huhmann had one of the most memorable performances Dillon Dym has seen this decade; the reigning EIVA Newcomer of the Year recorded 24 kills, nine blocks, and two aces, while hitting .667, on his way to EIVA Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors.
The Tigers also defeated Saint Francis in a tight four-set match that weekend, which helped get them closer to the .500 mark in EIVA play after an 0-4 start. The journey back to controlling their own destiny in the EIVA race has been a positive one for a team that starts four underclassman, including freshman setter Joe Kelly, but it's a journey that the team plans on including a return trip to the EIVA playoffs.
