BOSTON – The Princeton University men's hockey team will play in the 2019 Friendship Four in Belfast, Northern Ireland, it was announced last Wednesday by The Odyssey Trust, ECAC Hockey and Hockey East and the cities of Boston and Belfast.
The games are set for November 29-30, 2019, at SSE Arena in Belfast, the home of the Belfast Giants. Princeton will play an ECAC Hockey game versus Colgate on Friday, Nov. 29, 2019, and take on either Northeastern or New Hampshire on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2019.
"We look forward to participating in the Friendship Four in 2019," head coach Ron Fogarty said. "It's a great opportunity for us as team to not only play internationally for the Belpot Cup, but to be able to have a cultural experience in Belfast off the ice. It will be an adventure that the players and staff will remember forever."
Princeton has a connection with the Belfast Giants, a team that competes in the Elite Ice Hockey League. Stanley Cup champion Kevin Westgarth'07 ended his playing career with the Giants after the 2014-15 season. With Belfast, the winger played in 36 games and had 20 points. Two other Tigers currently play in the same league, with Milton Keynes Lightning – Ben Foster '17 and Quin Pompi '18.
The Friendship Four started in 2015 and is an annual tournament that comprises of four teams from NCAA's Division I Men's Ice Hockey, two from Hockey East and two from ECAC Hockey, each year traveling to Belfast to compete for the Belpot Trophy.
Princeton's schedule for the 2018-19 season will be available later this spring. More information regarding the 2019 Friendship Four will be available later this year and throughout the 2019 calendar year leading up to the tournament.
