Joe Kelly, Sam Shweisky Head To Chicago With 2018 USA Volleyball Men’s Junior National Training Team
August 14, 2018 | Men's Volleyball
Joe Kelly and Sam Shweisky worked together last season to lead Princeton men's volleyball on one of the most memorable turnarounds in the history of Eastern volleyball. They will join forces once again this week, as both are heading to Chicago to work with the 2018 USA Volleyball Men's Junior National Training Team.
Kelly, a rising sophomore, was one of 17 players named to the National Training Team, it was recently announced by USA Volleyball. Twelve players will be selected from the 17 to compete at the NORCECA Men's U21 Continental Championship on Aug. 27-Sept. 2 in Havana, Cuba. Shweisky is no stranger to USA Volleyball; he spent the last two summers as the head coach of the U.S. Youth National Team, and also has experience as a coach with the U.S. Men's Junior National Team.
Kelly earned the starting setter position as a freshman last season, and he helped Princeton dig out of an early 1-11 hole to reach the EIVA postseason. From there, Princeton stunned top-seeded George Mason to reach its third EIVA championship match since 2010. Kelly ranked second in the EIVA with 9.36 assists per match last season, though that total improved to 12.4 during Princeton's postseason run.
Shweisky, a former EIVA Head Coach of the Year, has built one of the best young cores in the EIVA. Princeton started four underclassmen last season, including 2017 EIVA Newcomer of the Year George Huhmann, as well as 2018 All-East sophomore Greg Luck.
The official U.S. Men's Junior National Team will be named on Aug. 24, and the team will travel to Cuba on Aug. 25.
