Princeton Announces 2019 Men's Lacrosse Schedule
August 29, 2018 | Men's Lacrosse
2019 Princeton Men's Lacrosse Schedule (all dates and times subject to change)
The Princeton men's lacrosse team will play 14 games in the 2019 season, including renewing acquaintances with an old friend and an old rival on a pair of Tuesdays in March.
Denver will be at Princeton on Tuesday, March 26, in Hall-of-Fame coach Bill Tierney's first game against the team he led to six NCAA championships before heading West in 2009. He's since won a seventh NCAA title with the Pioneers, who will play the Tigers for the first time ever.
In addition to the Denver game, Princeton will also be at Navy on Tuesday, March 5. This will be the 56th meeting between the two, but it'll also be the first since the 2004 NCAA semifinal game, which Navy won 8-7. The teams met for the first time in 1925 and every year but three from 1934-88, but their last regular season meeting was in 1990. Navy leads the all-time series 39-15-1.
Denver and Navy are the new additions for 2019, and NJIT is no longer on the schedule. The other 12 teams were opponents for the Tigers a year ago.
"We think we've put together a very challenging schedule," says Princeton head coach Matt Madalon. "We want to give our guys as many chances to compete as we can, and we want them to have to be ready every single time they play. We think this will make everyone in our program stronger and will prepare us for our goal to be playing into May."
Princeton will enter the 2019 season with the longest winning streak in Division I after winning its final five a year ago while tying for third place in the Ivy League. Opening day 2019 will feature the second meeting ever between Princeton and Monmouth, on Saturday, Feb. 16 in West Long Branch. The home opener will be one week later when Virginia is in Princeton, and then Johns Hopkins comes to Princeton a week after that.
Princeton is then on the road for three straight, at Navy, at Rutgers and then at Penn in the Ivy League opener. That is followed by three great matchups at home in eight days, starting with defending NCAA champion Yale on Saturday, March 23 and continuing with Denver on the 26th and then Brown on the 30th.
The schedule for April is at Stony Brook (the 6th), home against Siena (9th), at Dartmouth (13th), Harvard at home (20th) and at Cornell (27th).
"We felt it was important to put together this kind of schedule," Madalon says. "With this schedule, and with the new rules changes, we can't wait to get started."
